1. It doesn't matter how long have you been in the US. What matters most is
how you practice your English language and/or communication skills through
whatever means on a daily basis.
2. language≠communication:
English language is English itself. It's something like vocabulary,
pronunciation and grammar. They are easier to improve in short term. Think
about how long it took you to prepare for GMAT, GRE or TOEFL and scored
really high (< 1 year).
Communication is more about CULTURE. This is the killer for most of us.
While language can be improved by just studying as hard as you fight for the
USMLE steps ON YOUR OWN, communication requires more than yourself. Your
need one or more partners to practice and improve communication skills.
Then, the question is who is the best partner for your practice? My answer
is ordinary Americans that you may or may not know. But the next problem for
most of us would be how to initiate a conversation with our American
friends. One SINGLE most important thing, in my opinion, is TOPIC. Yeah, you
are not short of vocabulary (you got some most frequently used words from
GRE and TOEFL). What prevents you from initiating a talk is the lack of
common topics between you and your friend. Simply speaking, most time you
don't know what to say (我和这个美国同事能聊些什么呢?). That is the power of
topic.
Topic derives from culture. The more you are familiar with their culture,
the more topics you will have when you want to talk. Think about this: why
you can naturally start a conversation with your Chinese friends? One could
argue because Chinese is our native language. But rethink again, it's
because we have a similar culture and background and we talk about things we
are both interested, not simply the same language we speak.
My own method: subscribe a paper version of a local (I prefer) or national
newspaper like USA Today. Stop visiting Chinese websites and use those time
to read the newspaper every day. Yes, I do this EVERY DAY. Newspaper has
tons of TOPICS Americans talk about from time to time, like news, sports,
local gossips, culture of food and drinks, fashions and more. At lunch time,
try to INITIATE a talk (you talk first) with your American colleague using
one topic you found most interesting from the newspaper you read yesterday.
You will get two for one, that is improvement of both your communication
skills and your reading skill. I stick to this method for many years and it
works, at least, for me very well.

agree no more!
As suggested by an attending, you had better read newspapers everyday at
least 30 minutes or one hour!
That really matters!
Most of CMG are very intersted in the news fromChina but never care about
the news in our life near us. IT is completely wrong!
Your suggestion is very good! Initiate a topic after a short preparation..
.everyday with a native speaker.....Thank you!

We all have heard of the famous cliche of "easier said than done". Indeed,
improvement of communication skills would be such a task that fits perfectly
into that category. Do NOT expect your language and communication skills
will change significantly in days, weeks or even months. That simply will
not happen. It does take time. But you MUST take action, real action NOW if
you do want real improvement. When I say "take action", I mean a detailed
plan, like the one that helped you score a 99 in the USMLE tests. And
remember PERSISTENCE is the king.
Chinese students and scholars are no doubt hard-working people. Majority of
us, if not all, tend to accept the dogma that technical skills determine
everything. Following that rule, anything else you do would be a complete
waste of time. If you think that is right, then you are wrong! Do most
american go to work because they truly like what they are doing? No. They,
except a few nerds, just use their current job to earn money that they can
use to enjoy what they really love. That's it! Put all your time on working,
in my opinion, against their culture. You will be "hated" by those ordinary
folks. I am not kidding. We have to accept the "reality" that this is their
soil not ours. We need to adjust to their culture, but not vise versa, in
order to succeed. It's never too late to have a plan to improve your
communication skills. Start from TODAY.
Read the newspaper, watch some famous TV shows, listen to local radios,
follow the 2012 presidential campaign, check Yelp.com to find out some
famous restaurants in your area and go try them out, pick up the phone
instead of emailing when you have issues, buy an iPad and download some
famous games and enjoy, go see a hot movie......so many things you can do,
in a much more enjoyable way, to learn about the US culture and find out
more topics to talk with people. You will be loved and succeed, seriously.
I encourage all CMGs on this forums to share your experience of what you
think the best way to improve communication in the US. I believe we have the
power.

Back in June, I noticed an excellent article titled "Paper Tigers" authored
by Wesley Yang. It was published on the "New York Magazine" website. In this
article, Mr. Yang talks about some serious problems that many Asian-
Americans are facing right now. Although it is quite lengthy, I really enjoy
reading it from the beginning to end. If you have time, I highly recommend
you read it, especially for those who are parents already. What would you
like your children to be when they grow up here in the US? Refresh yourself
with it and rethink about yourself at least for now.
To get this article, search Google using key words: "New York Magazine" and
"Paper Tigers".
Happy sharing!

Yesterday when I was talking with my attending's MA, I asked her a question
regarding my strength: what do you think I am different from the other FMGs
you have met in this clinic? She told me that I am very open, would like to
communicate with different staff.
The FMGs she met before were usually quiet, and did not talk with the MA
staff except their preceptor.
I personally think we should welcome all the opportunities to work and talk
with different medical staff and learn from them.
Moon Day is coming. I brought some moon cakes to the clinic and wrote a note
about Moon Day introduction attached to the cake box. All the medical staff
enjoyed it.
As long as you like to open your mouth without many concerns, you will find
out it is not difficult at all to talk with the Americans around you.
