medical specialties' future, what's the situation regarding this year's
residency application for AMGs? No official statistical data is out yet, but
one certainty is that we will feel more pressure because more than 500
additional AMGs entered the race this year. Here is a general impression
about applications in preliminary medicine, transitional year, general
surgery and radiology, based on the limited experiences fro |

他的一个同事来到美国突破重重困难考过了试
因为英语不好分数不高结果 只 申请到放射科
令人扼腕叹息
谁会知道今天放射科如此热门
人的命天铸定
不服不行 |
e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 5 Very true. My professor (who has worked in Rads for 30 years) told me that
by today's standard he could not get into radiology.
I have met a lot radiologists and residents and seems they're very satisfied
with their career choice.

Except extra 500 AMGs, do you feel the big wave from Europe?
Thanks for sharing of your sharp analysis on this year's trend . |

research background + connection (the most important thing).
So try to find any type of connection if possible. Otherwise, many program
directors even don't both to look at IMG profiles at all. |

rotations with. I just started my interviews and so far I haven't met any
European candidates. They're more likely applying for IM positions.

e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 12 Thanks teabao. Yes for AMGs most programs don't require Step2 CK and CS.
Columbia is a top medical school. 80 programs? Not for other less
competitive specialties.
Actually my goal is not reading films in a dark room. I like to use my hands
to do interventional procedures. Both radiology and general surgery will
lead to that route through a fellowship. Some people choose radiology for
lifestyle reason. I enjoy my surgical rotations very much and don't mind
working harder. I'll pay more attention |
e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 13 Yes Rads is very tough for IMGs. Looks like you got a good start, and good
luck to your application and interview.

i***e 发帖数: 52 | 14 Hi Eric,
Thanks for the information.
Can you give some your opinions about diagostic radiology and radio onclolgy
? |
e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 15 Both are great fields. Radiation Oncology is even more competitive because
only a small number of positions are offered, for example in 2009:
Diagnostic Radiology 1,095
Radiation Oncology 156
Research experience in Radiation Oncology is very important, so the "
connection" to the people in that field. One student at my school didn't
match two years ago and he spent one year on Radiation Oncology research. He
finally got a position in the 2009 match.

e*****a 发帖数: 1334 | 21 Update: During interview, a very good surgery program on east coast said
that they received about 20% more applications this year. Looks like the "80
-hour rule" makes a surgery residency less "scary" for many people. There
are many fellowship options available for surgery. For this program,
residents have a great chance to do a fellowship if they want. |
