果系里支持,dean那关也容易打通。dean不会完全不管你们系的意见就promise你early
tenure。

talk to your dept chair and tenure committee chair first. their support
weights the most.
also, if you are putting together your dossier this year, the letters from
your college/dean will be needed at the beginning of next year, by that time
, it will likely be the interim or new dean to write that letter - very
possibly, they will completely follow your dept/tenure committee's
recommendations.

H****y 发帖数: 2992 | 4 有一个因素要考虑的是,如果early没过,还能不能在正常时间再上一次。有的地方可
以,有的地方不行。
还有一个因素就是,即使能上两次,如果early没过,之后这一年又没有任何提升,也
不大好。虽然说early的标准比较高,但还是不大好。
个人感觉系主任的意见更重要。early要过,系主任和dean都必须全力支持才行,即使
你很强。 |

it depends. if you have had such conversation every year in your annual
merit review (or even part of the discussions during your initial offer),
and the chair is well aware of this possibility, and perhaps had suggested
you what should do to get ready, then, free free to bring it up again and
ask for his suggestion.
but if this is the very first time this was brought up, unless you have done
something remarkable in the past few years and everyone agrees that your
case is a "slam dunk" (not just research, but teaching and service!), then,
it is not going to be an easy suggestion - the chair wil have to discuss
this with other senior people, especially the tenure promotion committee.
nothing bad is going to happen - the worst case scenario is that
chair turns you down and ask you to check with him again next year. you will
probably see this in the first couple of min of your conversation.
Once I asked someone senior (associate dean) about early tenure - one thing
he mentioned was: if you have a weak case but pushed to go up, it gives
people an impression of arrogance, so minimize this risk by first talk to
your unit chief.

b*********0 发帖数: 1441 | 7 我也是最近刚谈过,系主任开始不支持,因为不想开这个先例,怕以后有人也这么玩,
他工作难做。后来他看我比较坚决,去和其他faculty和dean聊了,发现大家都很支持
,所以他就转而支持。估计准形势,别谈僵了就好,进退都留点余地。

一般来说这时候找Dean没有什么用啊。 他说支持和不支持都无关痛痒。 他现在说支持
你, 但是需要Dean's approval的时候(今年年底或明年年初)他已经不在其位了,
继任者也不会听他的。 他说不支持, 你届时也不需要他的首肯, 除非他到学校里这
个决策线上更高的位置上了。
最重要的是你们系里的支持。 一般interium dean 多一事不如少一事,不会太强势,
多以系里意见为准。 |
