以前的导师讲，我不可以跟名单上的人打招呼，影响不好。
昨天有个外校的副教授给我们一个talk.跟他闲聊，他说，理论上他提6个名字，系里提
6个。事实上，他提了12个人，系里用了他提的6个。而且，他跟所有12个人都通过电话
，告知他们在他的名单上，并确定他们的意愿。
这里的前辈们，是如何处理的呢？ | H****N

Theoretically your adviser is correct. However, in reality, it is better for
you to contact the persons you are going to provide to the department (you
do not need to tell the department chair that you have contacted them). If
someone you contacted is not very positive about your request, that is a
strong negative sign and you should not put this person on your list.
Opinions of external reviewers are very important for your tenure and
promotion case: they are frequently cited in department, college, and

何合作关系的, 只是一面之交. 我不知道系里用了几个, 我一个都没去联系(压根没往
那里想).
心理阴暗些地说, 我觉得私下去联系那些潜在reviewer的人, 多半是对自己的case信心
不足的. 退一步讲, 你去和人家打招呼, 万一对方觉得你这么做不professional, 会不
会影响他/她写的信?

比如前老板，打听一下，哪些人比较靠谱。有些人看上去和蔼可亲，但是写的信有可
能不是很正面。

发帖数: 8561 | 9 我也正在找,我们学校需要10个人,我都是开会时候碰头时候直接问,主要是如果找牛校
的教授,需要问的第一个问题"Do you want to give this guy tenure in your school
?"我不知道对方会怎么回答(明显我在牛校是不太够的),还是见面问了保险.
举个例子,一个30-50名学校的DEAN,人很好,我和他说了这个事情,他哈哈大笑说他做过
无数次reviewer了,只要他同意帮忙,我就不用太担心,他知道学校和学校的差别.但是他
也很诚恳告诉我:我的文章没问题,GRANT在他们那里还是少了. | h*****w

价？难道说，“We will definitely give him tenure at Princeton, so he is more
than good enough for tenure in your school”?

不能类似这么写,那你还是别找了,一般牛校的人应该这么写:
If you do not give him tenure, I will recruit him to our school.
这是学校希望看到的标准答案,所以我是一个一个问过的,特别是那些身在类似
Princeton的牛牛.

in his field. He did not think too much of of it and stilled listed him. He
got a terrible letter from this person and had to retract his dossier and
wait for another year. So if you have any doubt about any body, don't list
the person. Generally one should not contact the potential reviewers. It is
a bit tricky here as mentioned above. If you know the person, you can
usually tell if the person likes you or not. If you are not sure, it may be
a good idea to ask your friend
or former boss to inquire.

发帖数: 8561 | 18 切记在T之前不要得罪任何人就好了,知道一个在公立学校没有过的CASE:这人有CAREER,
有大于20篇文章,大部分都是好文章(类似JACS档次,他在化学系)和通讯作者,很可惜此
君得罪了一个他不应该得罪的人,最后该学校三年其间的PROMOTION全校就他一个人没有
过,学校赶他走的理由竟然是他没有拿过NIH GRANT...

我们学校不允许book editors. 有位牛人邀请我给他编的书贡献过chapters.院领导说
，我不可以列这位教授，因为，我们有利益牵扯。我如果拿了终身，他编的书会卖得更
好。哎，这逻辑。

发帖数: 461 | 22 我们系主任对我挺好的。她以前说过，如果我提交的名单上有她知道的那些个教授，她
会知应我一下。今天去她办公室又确定了一下。她让我放心，说希望这一年快点过去，
与我一起庆祝。让我把手里的东西继续做好。
