weeks. In addition, I am usingtransenic mice, which also cost a lot.

On average, I plan to use one rat and one mouse per experiment day (185 days
/yrs)
Rats
185 rats/yr x 3 yrs ($50/rat + $1/cage rat/d x 56 d) = $58,694
TG mice
Purchasing:$220/mouse x 6 mice/strain x 6 strains = $7,920
Maintenance: $1/d/cage x 40 cages x 365 d/yr x 3 yrs = $43,800
Genotypeing: $7.5/tail x 185 mice/yr x 3 yrs x 3 (34% mice carry target
genes) x 2 (use male only) = $24,917
Subtotal for mice: $76,637
Total for rats and mice: $135,331
Total cage: ~100 cages
Any places are overestimated?
