one story in my phd school, an AP asked an external professor to write him
a letter for his tenure promotion and it was a very negative letter.

blame their advisors. Actually, your advisors want you to be good and he/she
feel great achievments.
Well, some students should review themselve and see whether or not their
work is not impressive enough or ...

当然,大多是非美国本土的教授写的.

in his case, 3 letters from his request and 3 letters from dean's invitation
those letters from dean's invitation are all very positive
the negative one is from a professor he himself asked.
btw, they are both whites

nice in general. but in writing letters for employment, i never got a good
one from him.
when i was looking for a faculty job, once i had a dream school asked for my
transcripts, and informed me that they were collecting letter of
recommendations. a few days later my advisor tolf me that he got such a
request. but i have not heard from the school ever since.
i eventually got a faculty job. after in that job for a while |

him says that he is nice. he even telling me his efforts in getting
one of his former students getting tenure in another university while
i was a student.
i still maintain contact with him, and he is still very "nice".
then again, the letters may not be outright negative. but in others'\
eyes, a non-positive letter from ones own advisor is an extremely negative
thing. |

我也拿到了那个internship，但我去了之后，公司里有人私下跟我说，你怎麽回事？给
你写推荐信的XX直接写说你根本不ready，要不是你导师大力推荐，你这事儿就黄了。
从他的话我知道了两点：1.不是所有答应给你写推荐信的人都会给你写好话；有些人就
是想这么黑你； 2. 要好好感激我导师。
