Why I am Not a Professor

This year, 2007, marks the marks the eighth year at which I ceased to be a
tenured lecturer in the UK, what is called I think, a tenured professor in
the USA. I've never worked out whether I was, in American terms, an
assistant professor or an associate professor. But it really doesn't matter

. 其实马克思当年就是用这个调调骂完万恶的capitalism,再自创一套communism.

stop noticing that his observations of where the academia world goes,may be
also true in north america to some extent.

发帖数: 12367 | 9 虽然有几点很好的points，但太偏激了。。。
（1）文章并不是只有里程碑式的才有用，罗马不是一天建成的；
（2）指责别人文章多但意义不大的人，要有凭据(total citations and H-index)，
而且自己得至少有些意义大的文章，音乐界莫扎特不常有，但林夕之类还是颇多吧，
科学界也同理吧，爱因斯坦不常有，但>300篇文章，>万次引用，H-index>40的还是很
合理地多吧；
（3）发达国家年轻人离开science and engineering，不单纯因为他们有sense；
（4）引进外籍非英语母语faculty并不可怕，等到几十年后中文成为科学界通用语言的
时候（我相信有那样一天）再哀叹吧，那种酸溜溜的感觉实在funny；
（5）从作者的英文水平来说，比较适合做一个作家或者文学系的教授，而不是计算机系
教授。也许故意写成这样显示一个英文为母语的前教授的文法水平，洋洋自得昂起盎格鲁
萨克森的头颅鄙视那些只会简单平白科技语句的非英文母语教授们。可惜我老人家居然没
办法找到伊任何一篇科技论文拿来拜读。
（6）作者面对这些问题，自己先丧失解决问题的passion，决定qui

当年他大致是这么说的：并不是数学很好才能做数学家，一个好的数学家，能养活一个
数学系的人马。
这就是大胸怀，愿意用自己的成果，无偿的养活别人。
在数学这个经典的纯理论领域，绝大部分人，还是混饭吃。

successful ones as "living a lie"? even he was not able to be a good researcher, he could become a good teacher, of course, as long as he was passionate enough to teach foreign students....
and, it is rather disturbing and disgusting to say "Since ENGLISH PEOPLE ARE
, on the whole, WELL ENDOWED WITH SENSE, the consequence is that the
youngest and smartest of our young people are moving away from being
lecturers."

从复杂的经济现象中抓主要矛盾的直觉，不是一天两天培养的
且不说好多理工科转来直接上高级微观，
学了经济学对很多基本问题都解释不清楚
