not necessary. a new book may cover contents from some more recent
literature. Professors want to expose students to such contents (meaning you
need to read them) but may not cover them because either they did not have
time to write notes about them or they think the contents are advanced so
not everyone in class needs it.
Of course, what you speculate is also possible.
