I received the email this morning and my card is under production (July 8th)

However, I have a question for you. I will leave for China this Thursday(
July 14th) and be back on Aug. 14th. I believe that I will not receive the
card by this Wed. Would you like to suggest how I should process this?
Can I still use AP/EAD combined card? Or should I ask my friend to mail to
green card to me when I am in China?

Since they just ordered production today, it is unlikely you will receive
the card by Wednesday. You have 3 options. The 1st option is what
recommend. If you are not able to obtain the I-551 stamp using option 1 -
then you have option 2 and 3.
1. The best option is to receive an I-551 stamp in your passport to show
you are a legal permanent resident while waiting for the green card. The I-
551 stamp would allow you to reenter the US as a permanent resident.
Since you are leaving on Thursday, this may not be possible but you should
try. You need to make an InfoPass Appointment for the local office. You
can make an appointment at: http://infopass.uscis.gov/. There may not be any available appointments for this week - if not, make the first available appointment - just so you have an appointment when you go to the office. Go to the office this week with your appointment notice and explain that you are leaving for China on Thursday and need to obtain an I-551 stamp. You will need to take a copy of the online status showing your card is being produced, a copy of your I-485 receipt notice, a copy of your travel itinerary showing you are leaving the country on Thursday. Be as nice as possible and explain your travel situation and ask if they can stamp your passport with the I-551 stamp. They may or may not accommodate you. If you are able to obtain the I-551, send us a scanned copy.
2. Have a friend watch your mail and send to you. If the green card is
received soon after your leave, your friend could send to you via federal
express or a trackable service to make sure you receive before returning to
the US on August 14th. You would then be able to enter as a permanent
resident.
3. You return using your current EAD/AP card. If the officer asks about
your permanent residence status, you can say the green card was produced
while you were out of the US and it should be waiting for you.
