esearch Associate / Assay Development POSTED: Apr 04
Salary: $ 35,000.00 - 45,000.00 Location: East Lansing , Michigan
Employer: Michigan State University Type: Full Time - Experienced
Field of Specialization: Analytical Work Function: Quality Control/
Analysis, Research-Applied
Required Education: Doctorate
We seek an analytical/organic/medicinal chemist to develop assays to measure
pheromones and other biologically active molecules of lamprey and fish,
found in either natural water or animal tissues. The successful candidate
will join a multidisciplinary research team (Laboratory of Weiming Li) that
studies many aspects of lamprey and fish biology. Developing assays to
quantify sea lamprey biological molecules is a major focus of our research.
The successful candidate will develop assays for identified pheromones to
profile their metabolites from source tissues, to determine their excretion
mechanisms and to quantify these compounds in the stream water. The
incumbent chemist will also collaborate with biologists and other chemists
to characterize physiological functions of molecules of interest, and
interact with federal agencies conducting field studies of sea lamprey
pheromones. The accepted candidate will be expected to work independently,
train graduate students and technicians, write reports to the funding
agencies and publish research results in peer review journals. For examples
of our previous research on this subject, please see Science 296(5565): 138-
141; PNAS 106(4): 1021-1026 &109(28): 11419-11424; and Talanta 89: 383-390.
More information about our laboratory can found at https://www.msu.edu/~
liweim/. The salary range is between US $ 35-45 K and will be commensurate
with experience and training. Duration for this position is two years, with
possibility of extension pending on availability of funding. Please send
cover letter, CV and references as attachments to an email to Dr. Mar
Huertas at m******[email protected], with “Application for Chemist” in the subject
line. We plan to fill this position very soon. Applications will be
evaluated until the position is filled.
A Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, natural products or organic chemistry, drug
metabolism or a related field is required. An ideal candidate would have a
keen interest in using chemistry expertise to solve biological problems,
expertise in LC/UPLC separation (using the right column and mobile phase,
modifier, pH), extensive training in HPLC, LC/MS separation (using the right
column, mobile phase, modifier, pH) and in LC/MS/MS method validation (FDA
guidance), and proficiency in NMR and substantial experience in analysis of
biological molecules in environment (including experience in sample
pretreatment for biological sample matrices like SPE, LLE, PPT). Furthermore
, the candidate should have demonstrated ability to publish results. Hands-
on experience with metabolite profiling in biological samples is preferred.
Previous experience in identification of biological molecules is highly
desired but not required. |
