In this article, I will explain how you are able to upgrade to a new device
the right way so you can retain your Freedom Friends, Phone number, and
account credit. There are different cases to this so I will try to address
everything one by one.
Case One - Upgrading to a FreedomPop phone off the FreedomPop website
If you intend to buy a phone from the FreedomPop website, purchase it while
signed in to your current account. This way you won't need a new email
address. Once you receive your new phone, ask an admin here to swap the
devices or call (888) 915-2647 and Press 3 for tech support so they can swap
the devices. Your old phone will stay activated with the new number you
selected earlier so you should be good to go after the switch. You're also
able to deactivate your old phone if need be.
Case Two - Upgrading BYOD Style
If you have a compatible BYOD device laying around, go ahead and activate it
at www.freedompop.com/BYOD . There will be a $19.99 fee to do so but can be
refunded if you're deactivating your old phone. Once you're done, call (888
) 731-1555 and press 3 for technical support so they can swap the devices
between two accounts. Or drop a PM to any of the admins, they don't bite ;)
Once the switch is done your old account will have the new device on it. You
can choose to deactivate your old phone to use it again on Sprint or FP. An
admin or phone agent maybe able to refund your BYOD fee.
Case Three - Upgrading with an FP phone from a partner reseller
If you bought your device from third party resellers (Staples, w00t, Tanga,
Groupon, Office Depot, etc), activate under a new email at www.freedompop.
com/activate to activate for a 1￠ verification charge. Then call (888) 743-
8107 and press 3 for tech support or simply PM an admin to get the devices
switched. Again you can deactivate your old device.
After the upgrade
Once the upgrade is done, upgrade your PRL and Profile. Your MIN has changed
to reflect your old phone so you will need to upgrade your Profile
especially to access data. Then force clear the Messaging app data so when
you open it again it will reflect your original number.
