Church is like Intel's Moore --- try to give some kind of direction or
principle;
Sunney is like Edison --- try to invent tools/toys
It is surprising for Harvard to have so many engineers: Church, Sunney and
Whiteside

Harvard always tries to create the future. Those guys are the future of
biology. I say "biology" not "bioengineering", is because the science of
biology is almost totally depending on new engineering tools

化，别的东西，结构也好，生物信息也好，甚至分子和Imaging也好，还不知道如何的
系统和合成生物学也好，都是辅助作用。你随便说个铭记脑海的重要生物学发现，看看
到底什么东西缺不了

微积分发明之前，工程计算全都靠凑数，跟今天的生物学有什么区别。。

就可以炼出金子，所以那个时候化学叫做“炼金术”，术师们碰出来了就发一笔财，
就跟今天生物信号通路试出来一个就发一堆nature/science，甚至还可以整出一个
新药。但这绝对不能一直这么搞下去的，因为现在生物炼金术的“学徒”已经太多了，
都要做很多年学徒，已经很苦了; 而且传统方法已经越来越难炼出“金子”了。现在
新药的研发越来越难，传统的路子基本上都快走不下去了。
炼金术在十九世纪中叶之前只代表了化学的过去，而不是未来。有了元素周期表之后
，大规模的合成才成为可能，才有后来的化工产业。
生物学需要一个像化学里面的门捷列夫这样的人，需要一个“元素周期表”这种东西。
这个观念，以前Wendell Lim在Nature Chembio上面写过一篇散文，就是讲
他的这个理想，虽然还没搞出来，不过不管是Geroge Church还是Wendell Lim
我是很佩服的，人类祖先里面总要有一些开始尝试使用工具，仰望星空，人类才会
得以进化。不能总是住在山洞里吧，虽然山洞其实冬暖夏凉。
