c********d 发帖数: 85 | 1 To better understand the reasons behind Rao and Shi's return to China, one
might want to read the below old story first.
Neuroscientists see red over Dalai Lama
Nature 436, 452 (28 July 2005)
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.02/dalai.html
When I first saw the story when it happened, I admired Rao and all the
Chinese scholars who put their names there open in public, at the danger of
being retaliated by politics among their colleagues holding opposite views
and hiding in the dark. I thought Rao and Shi might have to pay a price for
speaking out. So it didn't surprise me that rumors came out that Rao was not
picked to be the Dean of Columbia Medical School. It also seemed natural to
me that Rao and Shi, etc later decided to return to China to help build
Neuroscience in China.
If one has confronted the prejudices in America against China/Chinese, he/
she will know how hard it is to defend China from malicious, unjustified
attacks (Certainly some criticisms on China are correct and justified). If
you are in positions like Rao, Shi, etc where they have reached the glass
ceiling and where racial politics among brainwashed "liberal" professors
become unbearable, you'll understand their passion for helping China.
How bad are the racial politics among top universities? Here is an example.
Shing-Tung Yau is the only Fields Medal winner in Harvard Math Dept. But Yau
is not a University Professor at Harvard, the highest professorship there.
But there have always been at least one Black person in Afrian American
Studies holding this prestigious title. Yau was rarely given any honorary
Doctor degrees by any U.S. universities. But Harvard and many top schools
give out honorary Doctors to Blacks every year.
We need more people like Yau, Rao, Shi, etc to help China, even if they are
American citizens. They are best qualified for power to initiate changes/
reforms. Yes, many of them have strong personalities, but which academic/
political leader doesn't? |

c********d 发帖数: 85 | 27 Show me facts. Or you SOB just shut the fuck up!! Stop the rumor mongering!!
Is it wrong for Rao to say he wasn't picked due to politics?? From what I
know about politics in American academia, that's entirely possible. Read
this where Rao spoke out again:
http://sciencecareers.sciencemag.org/career_magazine/previous_issues/articles/2005_11_04/noDOI.12910840254141366710
A Glass Ceiling for Asian Scientists?
Rao was very outspoken, thus caused lots of hatred among certain Americans
and Chinese SOB's. Yes, that includes you!!
After this article came out, Columbia might've considered to pick Rao as
Dean to show diversity and fairness to Asian scholars, but Rao's foes might'
ve forced Columbia to drop him for someone else.
What are the credentials for Condy Rice to be picked as Standford Provost
and then National Security Advisor? The then-Stanford-president admitted to
NYTimes that because she's black and a female.
Now go eat your shit!!
