Agnosticism
form of skepticism that holds that the existence of God cannot
be logically proved or disproved. Among prominent agnostics have
been Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, and T. H. Huxley (who coined
the word agnostic in 1869). Immanuel Kant was an agnostic who
argued that belief in divinity can rest only on faith. Agnosticism
is not to be confused with atheism, which asserts that there is no
God. (The Columbia Encyclopedia: Sixth Edition. 2000.)

AGNOSTICISM: BEING UNCERTAIN ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF GOD
Agnosticism is a concept, not a religion. It is a belief about the
existence or non-existence of God. An agnostic is a person who feels that
God's existence can neither be proved nor disproved, on the basis of
current evidence. Agnostics note that nobody in history has been able to
prove that God exists or that God does not exist. Since Agnostics do not
believe in God, they are not Theists |
