I wonder if there is anyone here using G4 OS X server as a workstation also. I
found some applications, such as mail, office, web browser, etc terminate
unexpectedly. Someone in our supporting team told me the reason is that OS X
server is not designed for working as a workstation, so he suggested me to
stop doing so. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks in |

刚开始学着用OS X，觉得看起来挺精致的，可是用起来太不顺手啦。因为
我只有一台G4，而且又要用作server，所以只好拿它即当server，又当
workstation用了。OS 是OS X server 10.2。可是经常用着用着，就来个
"application XXX terminated unexpectedly"，动不动就跳出来，特恶心！
mail，IE，啥application都可能突然crash掉。有谁也碰上这没有？难道
Apple就这么土？还是我太土：拿server当workstation用？难道是一次品
有质量问题被我碰上了？还是因为什么别的？帮帮我吧，实在太郁闷了！！！ |

看起来你得还不如俺的费时间
这么办好了，买一个双CPU的workstation，在上面跑windows也行,linux也行，
unix也行，无所谓。CPU呢，AMD的据说浮点比较快，适合计算用，不过俺没用过，
XEON其实也挺快。DELL就有双XEON的workstation。总之买一个来。内存能家多少
加多少，硬盘能有多大有多大，再来一个19寸的LCD显示器。
现在你不是没用并行计算么，反正也不止算一个case，那就两个case一起算，
一样不浪费机器，将来愿意了学会了并行计算也不迟。
如果$5K能买两个dual cpu的就更爽了，四个case同时开动。 |

两个程序是一模一样的，包括产生随机数的state。在两台机器上产生的随机数也是一
样的，我检查过。我刚想了一下，很可能是估计的步骤不同引起的。
一台机器是workstation，能运行好几个matlab,但速度稍慢，所以我先simulate所有要
用的随机数，分割成几组，存好，然后打开好几个matlab分别运行读取各组数据进行估
计，最后把结果汇总在一起；另一台机器速度快，就直接产生数据并估计了。很可能是
matlab在workstation上存数据或是读数据的时候有精度的损失，造成结果不一样。除
此之外，真想不出外什么结果会不一样。 |

在Dell上查了下：
Intel I7-3770, 8GRAM
一般$1000+就能搞定。
发现有Workstation，如配置Intel Xeon W3550，8G RAM等居然要2000~3000多的。
请问Workstation比普通台式机有什么优势吗

直接stream到我安卓tab和smartphone上。或者直接上各大tube网站看好了。
photoshop等等这些专业软件，有需要的人自然会上专业配置的workstation，
就目前来说大多数casual user的PC来run这些专业软件也不合格啊。 |

这里面PC端的OS就是我所在的小团队弄出来的。
对于大家黑的这些，我的总体看法是：黑的十分正确和漂亮。
其它项目团队怎么弄的我不清楚，PC端基本都是我设计的，实现方案改过几次：
1.最初和Intel一起改PXE（这玩意是啥东西自行谷歌，网吧无盘就用它），想多台机器
共用一
个镜像，但更改的数据分别保存，搞了半天发现PXE跨不了局域网，也用不了无线，不
能达到
张尧学提出的要求，被PASS掉了。
2.然后找了个开源的iPXE，号称支持广域网和无线，自定义脚本等诸多功能，整了半天
把原型
整出来了，又发现丫对无线的支持烂成渣，只支持一两个802.11g的芯片组，尝试自行
写无线
驱动，还是不可行，因为要支持的无线网卡太多，只要有机器的网卡驱动没有，那这台
机器就
无法使用无线来加载透明计算系统，所以又被PASS掉。

Communix操作系统最早是两个德国人Marx和Engles开发的（称为Communix基础版，或
Communix 1.0和2.0），遵守GPL，它的早期支持者曾经先后组织过两个国际讨论区。
当时少数先进的国家都使用微软的Windows，其他的绝大多数国家要么用DOS，要么作为
受Windows主机控制的远程终端，相比之下， Communix支持的机子很少，但移植
Communix的努力一直就没停止过。最早是以法国为主的一些人在巴黎、里昂等地移植过
，但失败了。
