揭露“民主”与“共和”两词的百年误译及相关政治误解问题

现代汉语里存在着很多翻译得不够合理的外来名词。其中多数是对西方词汇的本意理
解略有偏差，尚非存在着致命的缺陷。但也确有个别外文名词——而且是常用名词的汉
语翻译与其外文本意南辕北辙，只因早已约定俗成，竟然积非成是，以至于流毒后来。
其中影响最大，为祸最甚者，当数“民主”与“共和”两词，真可谓指鹿为马。笔者不
敢不辩，以正视听。
现代汉语中通常所说的“民主”指英文中的“democracy”，“共和”则指英文中
的“republic”。据西方的说法，“Democracy”源自古希腊人所用的古希腊语，而“
republic”则源自古罗马人所使用的拉丁语，正所谓“没有希腊就没有民主，没有罗马
就没有共和”。
近年来闻有国人说：“民主与共和在中国古代早就有了，无须再从西方引进！”不错，
“民主”与“共和”确实是古已有之，可不幸的是，它们在文言文中的涵义与其在现代

看了一篇王小波的杂文--“知识分子的不幸” 感觉说的不错
中国在春秋时期还有真正意义的知识分子，百家争鸣，出现了墨子这样的少有的讲究缜
密理性思维的知识分子，思想有点像古希腊的基于理性的哲学家
但到了秦朝就出现了重大倒退和不幸，就是商鞅的治国手段加上儒家思想的一部分东西
被后来历届独裁者放大，产生了“国学”，再借高考/科举这个世俗制度发扬光大，导
致了中华民族的文明倒退或者长期停滞不前
“国学”或者科举本质来说就是用来奴役知识分子阶层的，它是反智反人性的，它有各
种教条和寓言故事，不要求读书人去自己思考，提出自己的理论或者和国学里的圣典去
辩论去对抗，有点像穆斯林教条他们的小孩背古兰经，几岁就像疯狗一样跪在地上摇头
晃脑地疯背，这肯定容易制造suicide bomber。穆斯林和法家+儒家的共同点就是不允
许你自己思考或者批判这个“经”，只强迫你记忆，接受并且最好能吹捧它的逻辑，吹
捧的好的就是人才，就可以做官做宗教领袖可以荣华富贵可以操很多逼
想想秦始皇焚书坑儒，纳粹纽伦堡烧书，东方几个红色政权各种手段迫害知识分子，就

美利坚合众国第二百四十个独立节之日，重温了一下当时美国立国时杰弗逊起草的《独
立宣言》。
每读一次就不得不再次感慨当时立国之父们的英明及远见。他们在北美这块土地上，抛
弃了大不列颠的君王统治，建立起美利坚这样一个伟大的国家。
一切似乎都是上帝赐予的：这块土地上不仅有雄伟壮观的东部阿普拉契山脉及西部的落
基山脉，而且有着从广袤无际的大草原到美丽宽阔的大海洋，这富绕的土地难道不是一
种恩赐吗？是的，不过上帝恩赐给地球的土地也不仅限于美利坚，算算美利坚的土地面
积，即使现在也只位于全球第三或第四，为何美利坚却成了人们向往的地方呢？

Nowadays, the private arm has no means to match those in the military.
However, with gun, people have better chance to fight tyranny, more than
those who don't have. That's the point. Beside, with so many guns in the

就比如911, free people（比如ron paul），得到的结论是停止侵略其他国家，就不会

pass.
同样，在我看来，禁枪是对于mass killing的ez pass. 是prey on民众对于tragedy的

民主的保障是法制，US constitution protects minority right from majority
tyranny. 现在majority的反感还谈不上"tyranny"，但就是这个意思。
