公办的地方在downtown，没有租车，只能靠打的去远一些的地方，所以并没有机会去当

译出上一本书以后，由于暂时没有适合翻译的新书，我开始给自己放假：每
天坐在厨房的录音机旁，边听磁带边看电子书。三天前，随便拿出一盘《美国乡
村音乐系列情歌》（The best of country & western Vol.2），A面的第一首是
节奏轻快的《神龙帕夫》（Puff, the Magic Dragon）。这首歌我不知听过多少
次了，却从没有注意过歌词的内容。于是，我拿起磁带的歌片，看了看它的歌词。
然后，我被歌词的内容迷住了——我不能完全看懂它的象征意味，这反而让它显
得更加迷人。我想，这绝不是普通的流行歌曲，一定在西方或者说美英文化生活
中留下过印记。为了求证这一点，我必须上网。
我打开电脑，连上网络，在百度百科中发现了一篇谈论《神龙帕夫》的文章：
“‘有歌评这样说：这首歌主要是谈小孩子长大的过程，及对环境的感受。
歌词中的Puff实为一虚构的奇异龙，用此来影射孩子小时侯很喜欢小玩具，长大

里找出来，打上去世的记号，填上去世的日子，删除家庭住址与电邮帐号（这些会自动
保存到历史记录中）；再从网上找到逝者的讣告，PDF存档。刚开始做时心有点沉重，
想着每个名字背后的一个个不再活生生的人。过一阵就适应了，不再自作多情。搜索用
的是逝者的姓，遇到了许多形形色色的有趣的姓。有Goodman，Richman，还有Goodrich
。姓Poorman, Badman的会不会受到心理和命运的影响？有姓Superior，没见过
Inferior。Leisure, Riddle, Savage，Shoemaker轻松愉快。Love甜美，Sorrow沉静。
有一次看到一个头衔是Very Rev.，他比一般的Rev.怎么very？最头疼的是这样的名字
：John Smith, John Jones, William Williams…重名的太多了，要一个个核对个人信
息确认；讣告也要查半天。
每个去世的人都有讣告，报纸和网上。钱穆在上世纪六十年代初访问美国，发现这里的
