Ping Fu, staying indifferent to our kind advice for her not to attend the
2013 ALA Annual Conference, offered as Auditorium Speaker falsified
explanations about fraudulent accounts as recorded in her memoir Bend, Not
Break, Soochow University publishes herewith our open letter to Ping Fu,

现在的苏州大学占了东吴大学的地盘，然后以东吴大学继承人自居，英文校名和校徽用
的都是东吴大学的。
其实东吴大学早就在台湾复校了，英文名也是Soochow University |

近十多年来，过程哲学、建设性后现代主义哲学（过程哲学的另一种提法）被一群
美国学者引入中国。这些人主要是约翰•柯布、大卫•格里芬、菲利普&#
8226;克莱顿以及两名在美华人王治河、樊美筠。这些人以学术交流的名义每年多次进
入中国，或搞讲座，或开会议。然而，他们的身份却是多样而变化的！

capital city, it gets more tourists which promote the beauty and highlight
the city itself. In this sense, i donot think Soochow outweighs Hangchow
though Soochow is quite outstanding among all the best city for traveling in
China.
Still, when it comes to pollution, Soochow can not isolated from those area
that are deeply affected by the hazard of industrial waste neither. |

发帖数: 999 | 24 今天才看到soochow前辈关于李开复的帖子，受益匪浅，尤其是那句“其产生的危害和当
年21世纪是生物的世纪的口号一样，”让我忍俊不禁，回想良多。
Soochow谈到business版芸芸众生对此帖不大感兴趣，我想不尽然，只是回帖不踊跃罢了
。这年头，烂坑有的是人跳，好坑留给大家的就是思索，不见的都需要回的。
不过为免得soochow扫兴，俺还是斗胆胡言乱语几句，事先声明，俺既不是CS，也不属于
Business，纯属灌水，呵呵: )
对于第一段，我觉得这帖子具有强烈的感情色彩，导致好贴也说服力减半。没有哪个生意
人是老老实实的，只是有的走到了前台，有的躲在背后。任何人在媒体前面大肆吹捧说出
来的话，在某种意义上来讲都可以看作是误导，难得的是一个愿打，一个愿挨。个人觉得
他说的话还算符合国内主流意识形态，起码比马云同学的某些大论看起来中肯些。用美国
的价值观衡量中国的文化标准是不合时宜的，对于专业passion自始至终的观点在今天的
中国还有很大的市场，学生对于Google+海龟高管也是仰视的。所谓人在江湖，身不由己

诸如「沈阳」「张家口」「大连」等地名甚至都不是汉语，而是根据这三个城市分别在
满语、蒙古语和日语中名称的发音，写作Mukden，Kalgan，和Dairen。
很多人都有这样的疑问，为什么北京大学的英文名字不是Beijing University，却叫
Peking University？为什么青岛啤酒也不写成Qingdao Beer而偏偏是Tsingtao Beer？
而为什么有时候四川省的外文不写作Sichuan而是写成Szechuan？
除了Peking，Tsingtao和Szechuan这样较为常见的「非常规」拼法，我们偶尔还能看到
像Tientsin（天津）Soochow（苏州）等在今天中国人眼中看来很「奇怪」的英文拼写
。此外，这些英文拼写的出现似乎也有一个规律：他们都是地名。
实际上，这样的外文拼写叫做「邮政式拼音」（Postal Romanization），是一套曾经
专门用来拼写中文地名的汉字拉丁化体系。

docs proved from International office of SUDA, I still have the translation
of the school as Soochow which was used in history for "Dong Wu", any body

“1901年3月宫巷书院迁入天赐庄博习书院旧址，大学堂正式开学，以苏州于古代属东
吴地，定名东吴大学堂。6月13日，监理会以 Central University of China之名向美
国田纳西州政府提出注册之申请，并于6月24日获准。”
“ 1907年中西书院创办人林乐知先生去世，主楼命名为“林堂”以为纪念。颁授中国
第一个文学士学位(沈伯甫)。10月5日，由监理会以 Soochow University 之名向田纳
西州政府提出变更校名之申请。
1908年7月28日，获美国田纳西州政府之准，注册名称更改为Soochow University。”
这个历史年头是有一些，就是不大光彩。而且这个单词用的，chow, 还so chow,无语。
反正当时别人拿来问我的时候，我是怎么都没猜出来，以为是哪个台湾还是东南亚的野
鸡大学呢。这年头有必要半路随人家姓么。

化翻译拼写法是所谓的威妥玛拼写法，苏州拼为Suchou。后来又有了所谓的邮政式拼音
，是以威妥玛拼音为基础，结合地区方言和古音发音发展来的一种拼写法，在这个拼写
法中苏州被拼为Soochow （其它的还有清华Tsinghua，北京Peking，等等）。苏州大学
的英文拼法就是这么来的。 |

中国以前有许多大学是由基督教或天主教会创办，可以说是当时的世界级大学。不过，
在1952年中国院校大调整中，这些教会大学也集体消失了。
燕京大学（Yenching University）
是20世纪初由四所美国及英国基督教教会联合在北京开办的大学。是近代中国规模最大
、质量最好、环境最优美的大学。创办于1916年，司徒雷登任校长，曾与哈佛大学合作
成立哈佛-燕京学社，在国内外名声大噪。
在中国高等院校1952年院系调整中，燕京大学被撤消。国民党政府迁台后，燕京大学在
