i am a native american and have not been paid by the chinese government for
the following comments:
the dalai lama may not have owned slaves but he was the head of a theocratic
repressive feudal politcal formation that 'owned' serfs.
these serfs were forced to work the land of the church in order to feed the
religious and political administration of tibet, much like serfs in the
european middle-ages who had to serve their masters. they were not given a

个人认为peasant worker揭示民工本质，migrant worker揭示了民工的状态。
在一个seminar上，我曾经用peasant worker 指民工，提问者问为什么用peasant
worker而不用farmer， 我解释了一通。这个教授给我解释了一些peasant的意思。他说
，peasant更接近农奴，也就是serf， 一般在中世纪用得比较多，现在都用famer， 不
用peasant。所以他认为我在现代用peasant不合适。我只好说我沿用了官方的说法，其
实我当时很想说，中国的peasant就是很像serf， 但由于问题比较复杂，我怕自己用英
语解释起来很麻烦，就作罢。
现在看来peasant worker也是很像农奴工人，被捆扎在工厂里，成为机器的一部分，没
有什么人身自由，也没有什么强有力的机构代表他们，他们被无情的压榨。以前
Chaplin的“摩登时代”在我们看来可笑滑稽又解释资本主义的黑暗，现在成了中国现
实的写照。
