斯蒂芬斯和比尔?盖茨一样，都从大学退学。不过，他和盖茨对高等教育的看法可不一样。现在，他的身份是“不上大学”运动创始人，是“不上大学”网站的创立者。

从五年级开始，斯蒂芬斯就离开了学校。因此他深谙自学之道。2010年，他成为汉德里克斯学院的一名学生。不过不久之后，斯蒂芬斯就发现大学令人沮丧：理论知识和实际操作无法接轨。
大一的寒假，斯蒂芬斯遇到了一群同样对大学不满的朋友。“与其抱怨，不如自己办所大学。”斯蒂芬斯很快创立了“不上大学”网站，并开始招收学生，计划于今年秋季开始课程学习。
