一 引言
自从一九八○年代中期以来，笔者有机会在数所大学和研究院里任教、作研究或参与短
期学术交流项目。这些大学和研究院分别属于三个华人社会——香港、中国大 陆和台
湾，及两个西人社会——美国和澳大利亚。本文便是基于我在这些教育和学术机构里讲
解社会理论和比较社会学时对学生的观察和思考。在行文讨论中，我会 作两个层次上
的比较：把华人学生与西方学生进行比较，和把不同华人社会里的学生进行比较。前一
层次上的比较有助于凸现在非西方社会及文化背景下成长起来的 华人学生，在接受西
方社会科学过程中遭遇的一系列特定的困难。后一层次上的比较则有助于我们更仔细及
深入地分辨出这些特定的困难之根源何在。这里所说的 “学生”是广义的，包括社会
科学的新从业者。
简要说来，这些特定的困难有三方面的根源。其一是语言性质的 (linguistic，包括翻

原创，独家首发在天津版。
说是4月9号流水账，其实不止，早在半个多月以前知道会有这么件事儿的时候就已经坐
不住了。在上周的时候问了不少身边的中国人，居然多数不知道这个活动或者说无所谓
吧不准备去，当时很生气觉得怎么大家都这样呢。结果伦敦巴黎一闹，大伙儿的火儿噌
的就起来了，后来除了不能请假的怀孕的以及有其他不可抗拒外力的，我认识的基本都
去了。最牛的是我们系的上海妹妹，礼拜一还说嗯也许去吧，礼拜二下午就和我一起买
布做条幅和标语牌了，后来还十分英勇的和ZD搏斗来着，关于她的事迹一会儿再细说。
礼拜二早晨我要做一个presentation,在那之前都没空准备游行的事儿，一做完TALK我
和上海妹妹就开始行动了。4米长一米宽的条幅写的是“we love Tibet, we love

agree, agree, netural, disagree, strongly disagree"这样排列的。。。你做的那个
东东以前遇到的时候，用的都是multinomial probit， 譬如以前做过一个关于alliance
type的回归分析，DV是 defence pact, netraulity or nongaggression pact和entente
，不知道能不能和你那个构成类比。。。呵呵，没有做过以人为对象的回归分析，都是以
国家或是economy，polity为对象。。。
