he trained his footwork 08-10...
It is also common knowledge that penholder needs faster footworker:
1. one side penholder needs to use forehand a lot more often,
2. penholder w/ RPB still needs to cover 5-10% more due to the way the
racket
is held, shakehand's racket can cover 5-10cm more space.

Normally, in a typical club in US, penholders should be very limited unleass
there are a lot of chinese guys.
I felt that here in MITBBS there are a lot of penholders too. It is
interestring to see the number compared to the number of shakehand.

the majority has a lot better forehand.
any penholder who wants to break 2000 needs to improve his forehand, don't
learn from milestone, his style is so unique, not the way for us to work on. |

Tonight, played Zhang, Hongzhong, last time i played him was over 12 years
ago
at Sac tourm i won.
He has huge forehand, very powerful loop from anywhere, just like a Jap
penholder,
even though his reverse backhand loop was not bad at all in practice, but he
rarely uses in real competition.
I led 2:1, but lost the 5th as 7:11.
If i had his forehand loop, i could easily break 2100, close to 2200. |

Penholder.
Second, footwork is not easy to improve as well. Otherwise, most of players
would have a good footwork. Especially for those who are not young.
Finally, for some of us as male (like me ) learning from female players (
like Zhao Yue, Jiaqi) may be easier than learning from male players (like
Xu Xin) since it is not possible have the speed and footwork like Xin XU. |

had been learning from Ren for a long time.
Yong's style was very formal, you can feel his ball is not strange
at all, very comfortable style, i liked to play him, sometimes he
even let me win one game (21 points).
Milestone has attacks on his forehand too, the 100% pure blocker
is penholder Vincent, 2100 level. |

If we play 1-point game and I serve first, I may have a chance of 75% wining.
BTW, ( I may be wrong) I feel that the way of shake hand guys judging a penholder is different from the way of penholders judging a penholder. A penholder is easier to see another penholder's good aspects, which the shake hand guys may feel --no-big-deal--, since (maybe) only the penholder has the better understanding of another penholder.

At just closed 2012 Korean Open, Xu forced a seventh game against
Zhang and lost only by 2 points. The match score was 3:4, not 1:4.
Both Zhang Jike and Ma long have upper-hands against all three
penholders, Xu, Ma and Wang. Only Xu could get the closest to an upset.
Wang and Ma seem hopeless.

Xu Xin is still ahead with 39% of the vote followed by
Ma Lin with 21%.
Interestingly, both leaders are penholders, contrary to the
common belief that among shakehald dominated audiences, penhold
playing style is less favored than shakehand.
However, this can attribute to the fact, Xu Xin, though as a

From the limited contact i had with Ken, he is a nice person.
NY used to be a penholder until he reached his penholder limit
almost 1900, before he swiched to shakehand. He maybe likes to
learn 横打 in order to teach 横打 students:-)

to penholder and easily reached their shakehand levels.
if you can improve ur PRB as well as ur shakehand backhand, you are
there since you will get the serve/return/3rd ball attack advantage

balls. They all shake-hand, play consistently loop balls attacking/looping
and great defense.
They all make the ball long quickly then play at middle/far from the table
to go loop/defense.
Only our penholders like multiple-rounds of short balls since we are good at
inside the table. For our penholders, I guess that it is our advantage for
playing in side the table. When the ball becomes very long, it becomes

ur level, unless u are one sided penholders (for some, it did)
Penholder has natually weak backhand, they either add LPs on their
backhand, or learn reverse backhand looping, otherwise change
to shakehand as a blocker(could use LPs on their backhans).
for a looper shakehand, u might try to use short pips/medium
pips to see if it works for u, unless u like to try to be a
chopper, do not need to try LPs. |

rubbers, whereas shakehanders use soft bat with hard rubbers.
i would recommend using hard bat for penholders, except your level
is below 1500, when maybe you feel it is too fast for u to control. |

short pips, he never got used to it(looping), stayed in 1700-1800
for a while before he switched back to short pips to get to 2100.
there are 4-5 short pips penholders who play in 2000-2100 level,
not back.
After wayne Lo switched to smooth, his level dropped too.

Well, I don't know if you are using penhold or shakehand.
Basically, when he does not serve heavy under-spin, you would have to put
the ball close to his body (middle of the table) so he cannot easily launch
attack.
If you are a penhold, when blocking his forehand loops, try to block them
with left side-spin (towards his left side).
