Traditional Chinese doesn't necessarily takes more paper or ink, because
literature in traditional Chinese is much more concise than simplified(!)
Even those Baihua in Traditional Chinese are much more concise than Baihua
in simplified.
Have a try:re-write a paragraph from Jin1 Yong1's novel into "simplified
post-1949 Chinese", it'll take about 1.5 times more characters.
I just did this experiment few days ago...
