midwest是开发西部以前，美国领土向阿巴拉切亚山脉以西扩张以后的历史地理名词。
Louisiana purchase以后美国西部疆域大约扩展到密西西比河流域，芝加哥往南，

Though not living in Chicago, I think Chicago is the most beautiful
American city. I have to say that those who do not appreciate it must
have very bad taste. Although it has bad neighborhoods as other cities, Chicago does not decline as other old Americaan cities probably due to its location of the the center of American heartland, Midwest, and its "midwest values".
It has great culture, architecture and diversified industries and affordable living |

，晚上从实
验室走到家里，鼻孔里都结冰。从感恩节赶paper,圣诞节，到新年，直到情人节，都是
没日没夜地赶
paper，有一次赶deadline到早上，做在马桶盖上都睡着了。最后第四篇paper还没写完
，前面三篇
的据信陆续都到了。 那是个非常难熬的冬天，再加上深爱的前女友，给我寄一些她联
系钢琴的demo,又
突然传来结婚的消息。那段时间，我经常是哭着睡着的。
后来还有和小老板斗智斗勇，终于没有让他捣乱我的committee好让我顺利毕业。
但是还有那么
多那么多的工作，实在忍受不了没完没了的投稿被拒，终于从midwest逃离来到了西海
岸。奇怪的是，
过往几个年头要艰苦很多，但是很少几乎不感到寂寞，反而是工作了，寂寞感大大的增
强了，那我到底

来湾区一年多了，这一年中，除了剪不断，理还乱的心绪， 生活中最大的转变，就是
每周必去的COSTCO 了。
在midwest一呆就是十年，已经习惯了WALMART，刚来湾区时，满大街的找walmart，总
觉湾区的walmart 不如midwest 那么 方便。
终于有一天，放弃了去walmart的念头，代之的是每星期必去的costco. 其实，去
costco 也没什么要买，除了加油 和 隔几星期才买一次的牛奶，鸡蛋， 就是每个星期
必买的香蕉了。嗯，一串香蕉才一块多，够吃一个星期。
其实，现在也没有以前那么爱吃香蕉了。只是，香蕉已经成为生活的一部分了。每每午
夜醒来，心痛的无法再入睡时，只好起来，上上网，吃个香蕉，便也成了我特定的安静
计了。
说起香蕉，也曾经是我的最爱。小时候，总是希望自己生病，因为只有那时，妈妈的爱
才显得那么饱满，还 |

mantainance都方便。
我感觉普遍的说哈，读化工的博士有很多人客观讲学校，机遇都不好。所以最后身上有
股midwest的老engineer腔调。就是喜欢讲一些非常经验的，低层次的东西。真的就跟
撸撸大鸡吧，舔舔小黑逼差不多的层次。
作为一个真正的engineer，应该是系统的,methodology的讲述一个问题。而且要理论联
系实际。
好比说，自控应该怎么选型。里面大致有几部，每步应该怎么考虑。好比说一般设备应
该怎么选，大致有几步，每步都什么考虑。应该是上来要有个big picture, a map。然
后再details。最后成为一个procedure。
现在都是一副很浓的本科烂校老engineer的腔调。而且跟midwest一样的，上来口气都
大的不得了，什么化工代表现代工业了，etc etc。最后你听完了，明天是应该买
emerson还是西门子？为什么？
哦，我网上看大家讨论，西门子占多数。人家德国2战是纳粹，很牛逼的。fuck,这是
engineering吗？

版上爆了一些 FLG lowball 的 offer. 最近留心打听了下。L 消息不太多。F 和 G 的
消息挺多的。
招了不少最近都是美国名校的 CS 的本科和 master. 整体pacakge比今年夏天入职的高
一截。而且 F 家的通过率明显提高。
package 里的 base 还和今年夏天入职的fresh 学生差不多。但是 sign on + stock
的总额，增加了5W或者更多。看工资走向还是要看 fresh BS、MS 的价位。
湾区公司年终发 bonus 的比较多。所以现在跳槽的老手比较少。来面试的很多都是学
生。似乎各家HR 的底气都很足，没有抠门的迹象。另外几家小公司现在出手很足，F
家扩招的迹象太明显。工资看涨是肯定的。
哎 这么涨下去 存款真的不值钱了啊

better than Vandy.
All public schools in Midwest are crappy with respect to job placement.
There is basically no difference between Ohio State, Wisconsin-Madison, Iowa
, Minn, and Indiana-Bloominton. UIUC is better than the rest but still not
even close to Vandy.
Just ignore the Usnews ranking for non-T14 schools if your concern is job placement. |

living in a big house with nowhere to go, and nowhere to eat, I don't think
that is good quality of life
Based on my experience, housing prices are proportional to living qualities
at the place.
TX is very hot and boring. Other places with 300k, you have to tolerate
