发帖数: 116 | 7 I bought the book after I read the post here. I became impatient at about
one third of the book, and almost threw it away when half way done. But for
the next half I read through without a pause. Nice job, and
congratulations to the author.
The technology set up is reasonable, though "as usual". But I guess it was
not the author's main purpose to picture her version of the future
technology or future way of life. At least there is no mysticism, which I
am sick of (of course this is an issue of personal taste). The description
of war is also attractive, not for the weaponry used, but for the classic
war art of, using the language of one of the characters, "Baiting, deceiving
, creating uncertainties". This is especially the case for the last battle
in the book. The plot is indeed like a roller coaster. But all these are
not the most attractive part of the novel. In my opinion, this is a book
about -- for the want of better words -- love and life, in disguise of a
science fiction. Of course, many other science fiction were written this
way, and this is a good one.
Although the author was modest about her English, the writing is actually,
in general, quite mature. Maybe it is just me, but in some scenes I can
taste a hint of the wild cold plain which was a constant stage in the works
of many nineteen century British novelists such as Hardy and Bronte sisters.
She even named the mother country of the main character "Sunphere".
Coincidence or a salute to that famous novel?
Of course, the book is not flawless. I cannot be too specific in order not
to be a spoiler, but some of the plots are way too unrealistic. There is
also some feeling of inconsistency between the beginning part and the rest
of the book. Such a inconsistency may come from the continuous maturing of
the author's writing skill -- after all this is her first book and it took
her five years. But in the whole the book is much above my expectation.
The story actually is far from finished when the novel ends. A lot more
plots are foreshadowed. A reasonable guess is that the author is planning a
sequel or more. Hope we do not need to wait for another five years.

You are right about the “half-and-half”. I finished the first draft when I
was a postdoc at NYU. After I moved to Wisconsin, I tossed the second half
and did a complete rewrite. Guess I should’ve rewritten the whole thing.
I wasn’t trying to be moderate about my English. As I wrote the story, I
had to constantly google about the way a native speaker would write about
certain things. I speak Chinese at home and English at work, but the
vocabulary at work has been limited to daily conversations and scientific
terminologies. People say they learn writing through writing. I had to learn
English, as well. I think this is why it’s so hard for most Chinese here
to improve their English. You need to actively expand your English beyond
daily usage.
About the cold atmosphere. The three years in New York City was one of the
hardest times I had in my life. We lived in a tiny studio in Manhattan with
our son, paying $1200 a month to the university and more to his daycare.
Every night my husband did his homework in the bathroom with his desk and
computer inside, and I wrote this book on a sofa with my laptop. I thought
writing about a powerful woman would make me feel better, but in fact, I
found her life even tougher than mine. I also realized that people tend to
do things at the most inconvenient time. They may think they need help. What
they really need is obstacles.
Anyway, I am really happy to read your review, Sinan! I would be very
grateful if you can post your review to my Amazon page. This is one of the
reviews that can greatly help the readers decide whether or not they should
read a book.
