loquat is at least twice the size of seedling loquats. Large clusters of

white peaches, regular peaches, lemon, apples, oranges and grapes in the
backyard. I believe I ate two pears, 12 loquats all year and bought fruits
from supermarkets....LOL.
Out of all these trees, the Asian pear and the loguats (枇杷) seems to be
the strongest among them. |

Big Jim
Originated in San Diego, Calif. by Jim Neitzel. Large, roundish to
oblong fruit, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Skin pale orange-yellow,
medium-thick, easy to peel. Flesh orange-yellow, very sweet but with some
acidity, of excellent flavor. Ripens midseason, March to April. Tree
vigorous, upright, highly productive.

In China, it grows as north as south of Yangtze river, where occasional snow
and frost is expected. But, I guess you have to get the right variety to
bear fruit in such climate. I recall that some of the varieties in USA
actually came from Japan. So, they may be a little different from what I
saw in China.
I did notice that Loquat trees bear fruits about 1 or 2 months later in

我是个热爱户外, 喜欢在阳光下折腾的人, 平日里很少泡网. 去年春天, 偶然在老三
的一个帖子里, 第一次听到了菜版这个词. 好奇的找到了这个班, 并溜览了一下之後,
发现和果树相关的帖子极端的少, 且除了寒山大师之外, 也没有多少的同学谈及果树.
深感本应该也是庭院主题之一的果树种植, 在本班似乎还没得到足够的推广. 想想自己
种果树多年, 也摸索积累了一点知识与经验, 相信在这方面应该对新手能有所帮助, 於
是本著好东西要与人分享的心理, 去年五月也进了本班, 开始了施毒(白鹤语)的日子.
本班的同学们来自四面八方, 大家的成长环境不同, 但似乎大都来自凉寒地区, 对很多
水果, 尤其是可口的亚热带水果, 许多同学莫说吃过, 有些可能连听都没听过, 实在是

大部分热带植物在南加都长不了多么大，像mango也就一两人高，比热带的矮多了。

你知道英文枇杷出自广州话的典故吗？为什么英文枇杷出自广州话呢？下面细细道来：
枇杷为蔷薇科常绿小乔木，原产我国湖北与四川东部一带，今主要栽培于长江以南地
区，已有3000多年历史。主产地的华东，枇杷是五月上市，所以北宋诗人梅尧臣赞曰“
五月枇杷黄似橘”。而地处南亚热带边缘的广东，由于春天来得早，而有“三月枇杷金
满枝”之说。宋代大诗人苏东坡在惠州时，就有“罗浮山下四时春，卢橘杨梅次第新”
的物候观感。他说每年春天卢橘先熟，然后到杨梅。
诗中说的卢橘即是枇杷。1787年，英国把从广东引种的枇杷种植在英国皇家植物园，
其英文名为Loquat，是从枇杷的别名卢橘音译而成，可见“卢橘”一词，出自广州话。
南越人古时叫枇杷为卢橘。
卢橘为什么叫枇杷呢？据宋代寇宗?的《本草衍义》记载：“枇杷叶，形似琵琶，故名
。”所以在古代，枇杷和乐器琵琶两名通用，误出不少趣闻。传说明代大画家沈石田某
天收到友人送来的一盒枇杷，并附来一信，信中把枇杷写成琵琶。沈在复函答谢时写道
