在industry找到工作，你就不会在这里问这个问题了。在industry找工作主要就是在网
上或朋友间找opening，投简历，准备面试问题，每天花两个小时也就够了。因为你多
花时间也没有用，根本就没有那么多opening给你投简历！然后你如果还有其它的时间
，就应该看考board的书。
至于绿卡，没有绿卡也可以进industry，但是一旦被lay－off（公司的lay－off有时是
提前3个月通知你，有时是当天），我不知道你怎么解决身份问题。所以申请绿卡应该
是放在找industry工作和考医生之前的。
即使你进了industry，你也要时刻警惕着找下一份工作，或者考医生。这年头，连top5
medical school毕业的美国白人PhD一旦从industry失业，都会连续两年找不到正式工
作，只能靠做contractor养家糊口。当你处在那种情况下的时候，你根本就不会来问这

我bioinformatics/genomics相关的phd，过去只想着academia postdoc搞定eb1a就万事
大吉。
这些天开始关注eb1b；貌似公司里很多都支持eb1b的
我想请教：
1. 主要的问题是：我对industry一直有个偏见就是：非常不稳定。既然很不稳定，应
该就不合适办身份吧？（请嘲笑我）
所以我想请教：如果去了industry（对于我就是biotech和pharma），一般的职业路径
是啥样？在不面临大裁员的情况下，一般在一个公司/岗位能呆多久呢？
比如postdoc可以4-5年，攒citation，然后eb1a。industry的岗位也这么长吗？
eb1b需要permanent sponsor，所以岗位稳定性很重要吧？
2. 我老板应该是大牛，在学术界和业界都是。坦白说lab过去的人都去业界了（我们实
验室做神经疾病的），不过他们大部分都是美国人。所以我是不是应该求老板把我推荐
去industry？然后eb1b比去academia走eb1a更划算？

FIRM还是INDUSTRY。。。我问过RECRUITER，虽然现在这个经济状况，INDUSTRY TAX还
是有不少职位，而且好多大的公司都只要BIG FOUR出来EXPERIENCED的。。。所以，即
使有裁员，TAX在INDUSTRY应该也不会太危险了。 不过，如果能坚持，再坚持一下啊，
SENIOR一年或两年以后，比你现在跳要好呀！4大TAX其实是很幸苦，虽然不是很多
TRAVEL，但我们一年里几乎不怎么会有UNASSIGN的时间。加油吧，都不容易！坚持，在
BIG FOUR拿好CPA执照，赚1-2年SENIOR经验再走吧，TAX靠的是TECHNICAL，SENIOR
YEAR是最好的学TECHNICAL的时间呢！
现在去INDUSTRY，目前这个经济形势，不太好要价，到了INDUSTRY，RAISE就像FIRM不那么多了，每年那么几个PERCENTAGE，急死你。。。所以，等经济好点再跳也好要价，当然看你自己的EXPECTATION了。。。 |

Or collaborate with industry people? Talk to industry people at conferences,
ask them what are their technical challenges and problems of academia
research practice on similar field, etc.
Contractors are not ideal positions, but they are not bad if they are your
first industry offers. As you pointed out, the first offer is the hardest.

)，但是跟公司的律师交流发现有些说法和论坛上的说法不一致。所以有几个问题想请
教一下：
1) 现在（也就是过了10月以后）申请H1B（industry)开始时间是不是可以自己定？还
是一旦approved就得上班？估计加急的话11月中能拿到，但是想12月开始上班。
2）延伸第一个问题，如果可以自己定开始上班的时间，在H1B (academic)终止到H1B（
industry)开始这段时间，在美国呆着是不是合法？
3) 在收到H1B（industry)申请的receipt至approval期间，是不是能上班？（记得论坛
上说不行，但是公司律师说可以，所以想确认一下）。

搭proof-of-concept和prototype系统。和学校里的区别是要能做出demo, 能justify
未来的商业价值。往往需要teamwork和一些设备资金投入。一但技术
和商业前景都可行，通过technology transfer到production部门，才是
你所说的coding.
大公司内部都有自己的类似VC的东西，专门资助内部的Industry Research Lab。运作
像是个内部的startup. 其实Industry Research Lab如果管理的好，是很
有意思的工作，但现在几乎所有computing industry的Research Lab都是badly
managed.
学校里很多系统是data collection系统，只对灌水写文章用的。偶尔也有proof-of-
concept系统，不过最近越来越少，因为tenure制度不奖励这种活动。微软的lab有点异

一个孩子，觉得CPA firm真的是很辛苦的工作，经济不好，公司也很艰难.但我喜欢tax
,喜欢做return, 很有成就感。看了很多前辈的贴，说转industry是大部分人的选择，
想想也是，partners一个公司只能那么几个，CPA firm 本来就是一个金字塔的结构，
而且对我们来讲，语言文化差异会是一个很大的障碍.
我不知道做到什么时候转industry是比较合适的时候，是越迟转越好吗？我也担心转了
industry后，知识水平就没有在CPA firm更新提高那么快了，因为CPA firm是接触各种
各样的case,更不容易被淘汰.你们有这些考虑吗？
另一方面，不知道CPA firm and industry 哪个工作比较稳定，在经济不好的时候容易
度过.我的想法是，在CPA firm，你是赚钱的主力，在industry like IT，你只是个公
司admin部门的一块.CPA firm似乎稳定些，但真的也说不定，裁员一来也挡不住。

bargain. 我自己是做了3年public转到industry的.
我个人感觉,对于知识更新,industry确实不如public快, training 也不如public系统,
所以个人知识累积相对变慢,当然这方面可以靠自己挣CPE来补充. 但是就accounting/
tax的深度来说, 由于在industry是实际操作,而public基本是review/test,所以做
industry可以理解的更深更透.
至于稳定性,肯定是industry更稳定啦~~~~ CPA firm”赚钱的主力”太多了,所以不管
你多么重要, 也从来都是离了你照样转的, 没听过铁打的客户流水的兵嘛, 不然08/09
年public裁人还少吗? |

after 3-4 years switch to industry if you cannot bear the overtime/late
nights in public.
Starting in public will usually give you more exposure to different sections
and train you professionally - from oral and written communications to the
way of thinking/solving problems. And in public most people are more
talented and dedicated to work, and most people are professional, from which

没有绿卡，想问下哪个更合适career发展和申请绿卡
industry的，100多人的小公司，做preclinical的test，提供入职起初的training和以
后升职的机会，，自己不发表文章， 工作很push, 对communication要求高
posdoc--女老板，面试感觉挺nice，实验室发的paper产出多，3-6个月就有5-6篇。
research的grant主要来自于industry的公司。主要用于临床运用
老婆反对去做博士后，因为本人以往research一般，以往的博士后老板对于自己
research不满意，可能以前的经历让老婆很不舒服，忙了半天，paper没有，挣钱还少
，本人也无意向往professor方向发展。 可是大家都说在学校好申请绿卡，总希望能有
几篇一作，好办EB1A，所以有点犹豫
industry主要担心lay off,绿卡申请可能要花很久时间，只能走绿卡EB2，还有这个
industry工作主要要涉及管手底下的technician， 怕自己的性格做不下来 |

容真是太好了，所以也希望我们能够继续这个trend，多多讨论借鉴各个人的经验。
之前几个贴都是比较大范围笼统地讨论public accounting vs private sector，可是
没有讨论哪一个具体的industry。我的industry是funds/investment management,所以
其实跟那种实业大公司其实是有很大差别的，所以特别希望做funds industry的同行们
能聊一聊这个industry里面的职业发展。我记得版上还是有不少大牛在这一行业里的，
记得以前有几个好像是在funds company做controller？
那大家能不能来讨论一下这个行业什么时候离开public accounting好，或者是直接从
private sector做起更好？
以我非常有限的经历看来，funds好像比那些传统的实业的会计方面要简单很多，所以
是不是public accounting待久了也没有什么用呢？最近我和周围的人讨论的时候，不

发帖数: 80 | 48 想请教大家：请问这里有没有 Illinois registered CPA 又是在 INDUSTRY工作的?就
是Illinois 州2012 年 4 月以前考过 CPA 的可以申请 TWO TIER 的 CPA 证书，一种
是 LICENSED CPA (这种就是要积累 CPE ，每三年要更新一次的)，另一种是
REGISTERED CPA 证书 （这种也是每三年更新一次，不需要 CPE, 交钱就可以，而且永
远可以在名字后面写上 CPA, 这种证书 2012 年4 月以后考过 CPA 的就取消了）。我
因为赶上了2012 年 4 月的那个两种证书的截至期，所以一直都是两个证书都有，但是
现在很矛盾纠结要不要明年 RENEW 我的LICENSED CPA， 我现在在公司 INDUSTRY 做
财务，之前在 PUBLIC ACCOUNTING FIRM 做过一段时间，再也不想回到PUBLIC
ACCOUNTING，以后会一直呆在 INDUSTRY 的，也不用签什么 AUDIT REPORT什么的，所
以觉得LICENSED CPA 更新似乎没什么必要，浪费时间和金钱，反正有REG... 阅读全帖 |

I think that is not only the situation as a postdoc, but also for permanant
jobs either in industry or academia.
Get a tenure track faculty position in a university is so competitive and also
the first five years is harsh too. But once you get the tenure, you are safe
for your whole life.
It seems industry postdoc or jobs are relatively easy to get, but working in
industry is so unstable. I heard a lot of layoff stories.
