动：trifle, submissive, inadequate。还写过一段关于inadequacy，跟贴在后面。后
来还去重温了那篇小说。挺推荐看不动英文长篇的人看欧亨利获奖短篇集，每年出一本
书，短篇虽然不深厚广远，但很能看出作者的技巧、倾向，和时代潮流吧，哈哈这个词
傻乎乎的。

人的记忆都不一样，愿意选择的与选择写出来的又不一样。所以写作像是一个futile
effort。futility, waste，这些主题我觉得t.s. eliot笔下常有，现代性文学常有。
但结尾是肯定朋友写的童年，那就不是整个都futile，写作还是有存在的意义和积极的
作用。
futility这个词对我来说总是很触心。不知道你们看小说有没有这种感觉，有些词一下
子就能抓住你。我们以前学过一学期的o henry prize stories，都是短篇，大部分看
过就忘。但其中有一篇，反复用了个inadequate的词，我记得很牢很牢。我找到以前灌
水讲的这个词了：

次供大家讨论：
上次聊《走出非洲》时，tinte说电影里Meryl Streep演的Karen，叫情人Denys的名字
，都叫得尤其动听。Karen是丹麦人，Meryl Streep模仿丹麦口音的英语，口型小，语
调常常先扬后抑。这种特殊的口音，也正表现了她的特殊身份：一个背弃主流社会的边
缘人，操着独特的口音，来到远离文明的非洲大自然，寻找心灵的自由。
由此想起，除了《走出非洲》，Meryl Streep还演过好几个带口音的边缘人角色：一个
是《法国中尉的女人》，另一个是《索菲的选择》。

上次读艾略特的戏剧《鸡尾酒会》时，曾言一直偏爱以牺牲为主题的作品。这次读《索
菲的选择》，发现我喜欢的不是正大光明的、革命英雄式的牺牲，而是这种怀着罪恶感
的、宗教赎罪式的牺牲（redemption）。redemption这个词，我其实不甚了了；却因此
想起我喜欢的另一个具有宗教情怀的词：inadequacy。最先从一个短篇小说里读到，说
黄叶秋秋的季节，人总感到疲倦，有一种sense of inadequacy。当时很觉震撼：人生
而不足，想做很多事做不过来，想爱很多人爱不过来。譬之如武侠小说里，有内力不及

lady bugs来控制虫害。 WHO， AAO， 美国的EPA都制定了严格的Guideline来控制种植
，加工， 包装过程已保销售的食品符合有机食品的定义。 美国USDA于2002年十月21日

又想起来回greenaction，好像基督教有这么个说法：没有恶，恶是善的缺乏(lack/
inadequacy of goodness）。没研究过宗教，以前文学课教圣经的时候外教说了这一句
，也不知道是否有宗教争议，反正给我印象很深。是不是可以仿照说一句，没有恨，恨
