, stable snow, no avalanche concern. However, we did not make it.
We left trail head(5900ft) at 3am. The plan was arriving at the top of
Palmer before 5:30am, arriving at base of crater rock before 7am, arriving
at Hog's back before 8:30am, summitting before 11:00am. But we were a little
behind the schedule, especially from the top of Palmer to the base of
crater rock, the snow field is getting steep, about 35 degree.

Usually the snow is solid during night.
The standard south side route does not have glacier, but it may have
bergshrund (may or may not open)

I am interested in the Mr. Hood training, however, I don't know my schedule
yet. I will sign on once I can confirm my schedule.
In the meantime, I have a few questions for the gears. (I have never snow
climb before)
1. How much are the rental for crampons, boots, ice axe ? For the helmet,
should I use snowboard helmet or rockclimbing helmet?
2. Could you recommend for a typical pairs of typical boots, crampons and
ice axe that suit for this event?
3. For the outerwear, do I need hardshell or |

was very efficient an effective, every student learned what we planned to
cover.
Weather was marginal on Sunday, too much risk to take a team with at least
half of beginners to the summit. I just called off.
We achieved our goal very well (mountaineering training and possible Hood
climbing). Thanks for the efforts of everyone, especially those instructors. |

上一次去最后那一两mile平地走得人差点就崩溃了，endless & hopeless。这次征得
lead同意，背上了ski。好在leader领导下的pace本身比较慢，跟上没什么问题。
把ski扔在Devil's kitchen，然后从chute爬上去登顶。很严重的traffic jam，有一组
guide service的有十几人，这些人很mean，不让我们用他设好的picket，说什么“
This is my picket!"， WTF. 下去的时候在顶上等他们先下，他们一个一个地从上面
belay下去，花了无穷多时间。我们在寒风中雪地上坐了一个小时，人都快冻僵了，幸
好还有太阳。
等穿上ski也不是很爽，雪况很不好，icy & bumpy，加上第一次不认路，滑得也慢.
好不容易挣扎到ski resort lift area才爽了一把，比其他人提前一个多小时，趁机在
车里睡了一觉。
难怪背ski的人上山都比较晚，不用alpine start，都等着太阳出来多晒一会儿呢。 |

club的climb，某人（简称S吧）sign up了，S不是我们club的成员，也没上过任何moun
taineering课， 自我介绍里面号称是 marathon runner, 并且爬过两座雪山。 昨晚开
车过去的时候，leader和我念叨，说不知道S怎么样啊，体力应该没问题吧，但是可能没
有mountaineering经验，我心里说，那你为啥还把他招到队里来。
还是看看S的具体表现吧
体力方面， northwest登过Mt Hood的人都知道，从trail head到hogsback， 4500ft的
gain， 很多人4-6个小时是可以完成这段的，如果说是平常缺乏锻炼的，7-8个小时也能
接受了， 结果这位S，生生用了7个多小时，不知道这位算是啥marathon runner。。。
性格方面，非常固执。在雪上走了半个小时，我就看出来这位基本没啥雪地经验了，只
好抱佛脚，临时教技巧。 结果人根本不听。 就说pace吧，强调了好几次要匀速，结果
他还是喜欢走走停停，冲几步，休息一下，跑马拉松的不知道这个道理?

这哥们儿跑的全马至少有一半是走的。不过就算不是吧，跑平地和爬坡用的肌肉群还是
很不一样的。我记得我刚来seattle那个冬天每个礼拜treadmill mileage都在20迈以上
，开春了第一次爬Mt Si花了2小时还累的气喘吁吁的。背上包爬坡才是硬道理。
不过这些都是其次，主要是attitude。这样的attitude，再牛我也不愿意跟他爬。 |

路线： Mt.Hood Wy'East
早晨2:40出发，Trail head 5900ft, 4am到7600ft，从那里向东，下降400ft到white
river glacier，然后上到 white river glacier和Newton Clark glacier之间的ridge
， 从那里沿着40度左右的雪坡一直到summit ridge(10000ft), 沿着summit ridge一路
向北向上，早晨10点半到10800ft，离顶峰还有几百尺，这里是crux，55度左右的雪坡
，下面是悬崖，设了两根绳子的fixed line，10个人的大group通过这段很慢，从第一
个人开始lead，到最后一个人通过，用了3个半小时。过了crux，再往上走几分钟就登
顶了。 下午3点登顶，然后从南线Pearly gate rappel/down climb, 到hogsback，4pm
回到hogsback，5:50pm回到trail head
Total elevation gain 5700ft
总共用时15小时10分
