下，九人因违反刑法第211条和第459条（武装抢劫及入室盗窃），被捕，被搜查，被拷
上手铐，被塞进一辆警车车厢。车队将他们带至帕罗奥多警局，在那里立案，录指纹，

1971年8月17日的早晨，帕罗奥多（Palo Alto）警方拜访了九位年轻人。在邻里瞩目之
下，九人因违反刑法第211条和第459条（武装抢劫及入室盗窃），被捕，被搜查，被拷
上手铐，被塞进一辆警车车厢。车队将他们带至帕罗奥多警局，在那里立案，录指纹，
羁押，蒙眼。最终，他们被移交到斯坦福县监狱（Stanford County Prison）——暨斯
坦福大学心理学系。
他们是社会心理学史上最具争议的研究之一——斯坦福监狱实验的志愿参与者 。
这项研究的对象为中产阶级出身的大学生，他们的家庭背景、身体和精神健康病史，以
及社会行为等方面事先都进行过问卷调查，结果均显示“正常”；实验中，他们通过扔

a magazine like package.
Interestingly, there is no bylines for individual articles there. The style
is
unique, almost no individual style, unlike New Yorker, which almost
almost indulged in the individual quirkiness.
Economist strived to be plain, and New Yorker, more elaborated.

Why not everyone is a torturer
(So groups of people in positions of unaccountable power naturally
resort to violence, do they? Not according to research conducted in a
BBC experiment. The photographs from Abu Ghraib prison showing Americans
abusing Iraqi prisoners make us recoil and lead us to distance ourselves
from their horror and brutality. Surely those who commit such acts are
not like us? Surely the perpetrators must be twisted or disturbed in
some way? They must be monster |
