研究报告首席作者、艾奥瓦州立大学心理学副教授金泰尔(Douglas Gentile)与香港、新加坡研究员合作，进行2年研究，探讨电子游戏对儿童的利弊。
研究人员研究新加坡3000多名3、4、7或8年级小、中学生，查看他们玩电子游戏的习惯、学校成绩和其他精神问题，评估他们有无沉迷电子游戏，到病态程度；每周玩多长时间；是否冲动、社交能力如何；有无抑郁、社会恐惧症、焦虑等问题。
研究报告周一在2月号《儿科》期刊(Pediatrics)电子版发表，研究人员指出，青少年玩电子游戏，不算病态。但一些人太爱玩电子游戏，无法自控，结果电子游戏破坏他们的生活，伤害他们的社交、维生、家庭、学校和心理功能，就是一种病态。
