我的背景是工科master,学校凑和，工科研究领域工作3年（staff scientist)+通信公司一年（software engineer）数学，matlab,c++还比较好。Finance领域基本一窍不通，就看过CFA考试教材，还比较有兴趣。（牛人们轻点喷我。：P）
考古了下精华区，很受打击，好象我这个背景基本没戏啊。。。如果GMAT考得很高可有
机会呢？如果没有我应该把目标设在哪个档次的学校？

your question should have exposure to finance, cs, and ee phd applications,
which is very rare. but what i can say about phd in finance application is
that it is really very hard: about 2-4% acceptance rate in tire 1 and tire 2
programs. once you get in, 4-5 full financial support is guaranteed.
typically, there is no "admission". that is also the reason why it is very
hard to get in. |

我想进入FINANCE或者FINANCE/ACCOUNTING交叉的领域，对此也比较感兴趣。 但是由于
原来专业的限制，转到ACCOUNTING的MASTER最理想。 所以，就先去ACCOUNTING的
MASTER了。
但是将来长远的打算是进入我上面提到我更感兴趣的领域去，我想弄明白一些。
至于说先工作一阵子，但是我想提前作一些准备。。。

发帖数: 11 | 18 国内规划本科，过来读m architecture，不过对建筑没太大感觉。而且summer intern
发现这边的工作就是很轻松，不过pay极低，年薪40+k,涨幅又非常慢，感觉公司里大家
也都是混日子。建筑如果回国没有人脉，现在挂个外国设计抬头也不好混。
个人比较喜欢finance之类比较有挑战的工作。所以想在拿到march之后，再读一个学校
的msf，学校是靠近dallas,houston的tamu,college station，mays商学院排29，里面
的会计不错，finance美国学生的去向也还可以，faculty在德州还有些人脉。近2年也
有几个transfer过去的中国学生，不过还没有毕业，所以不好比较。
因为没有相关工作经验和background，听说msf国际学生好像不好找工作，不知道结合
偶的建筑学背景，以后美国就业机会和前景如何。如果北部找不到工作可以tx先工作几
年再申请mfe。实在不行就先继续干建筑，因为有了建筑intern，工作就是退后一年多
而已，偶的想法还不大成熟，想听听大家意见和打击。 |

我觉得还是有希望，每年每个学校毕业的 phd 也就3到5人，就算前100的都算上也只有
最多500人，其中还有不少去做 faculty 去了，街上公司的 demand 应该还能消化剩下
的 phd。
finance phd 比起 mba 和其他工科的 phd 在街上找工作有优势还是没优势呢？ |

aspects).
But the curriculum seems more extensive than the traditional MFE program.
And the program webpage indicates that the program concentrates on "all of
the finance".
I'm not very familar with this program. Do you know any other finance
program with good reputation in industry?

Yes, the most effective way to learn is to actually work on the Street. But
before that I still need to decide to finish my PhD in CS or to get another
Master in Finance.
Oh, a possible alternative is to neither finish the CS PhD nor pursue
another Master in Finance, i.e., just to start my job hunting in Wall Street
with only a Master in CS, which is probably not a good idea.

its finance phd program, considering two editors for top finance journal.
Yet I think the qualify can be a bit hard for you. Previously, a few Chinese
fin phds were placed in UCLA bschool etc.
This year they're offering a much bigger package than previous to attract
high calibre candidates to come. UMCP is putting its bet on upgrading its

expertise areas there cover in both corporate finance and asset pricing.
There are top-tire b-school in Finance research and many big-names attract
me. Don't put to much focus on placement records. Based on the limited
number of job market candidates, the placement is quiet random. The most

年排名看，这些年它的finance都稳定在8-15名之间，offer里面的给的钱也不错，但是
又在网上侧面了解到对它这个program的一些评论：一是说它们前两年踢人很猛；二是
毕业生的placement不如人意；三是学生不好找老师指导research、也难毕业。
上面的信息我都是从网上看到的，要是和事实出入很大，还请那里的同学谅解，欢迎指
正。
因为我没什么朋友在austin，所以来这里冒昧问一下：实情是这样么？比如“踢人猛”
是个什么概念？是通过qualify fail还是通过断TA啊？最近几年的它们系的placement
大家了解么？毕业很难么？
其实我手上也没有什么比它好的确实offer，选择余地不大，就是想多了解一点，以后
要是去austin了也可以早点用功看书准备扛qualify。

个人情况：想做corp finance，最好能搞理论，将来想进academic
UW - Madison: 经济系强，对以后搞理论应该有帮助。学校做corp fin的教授比较多，
理论和实证的都有。去年拿了85m的donation，希望未来几年能把program上升一个层次。
Boston College：私校，funding应该不成问题，经济系和Madison没得比，不在一个
level。但是综合各种的finance phd ranking，BC可能比Madison好一点点（根据发表论文数，BC可能好一点，但是根据论文的引用率，好像Madison又要高一点）。学校比较偏做corp fin，但是基本上都是做实证的。
另外，两校给的钱差不多，如果两者其他方面相等的情况下，我会prefer大学校。。。

从我CAREER DEVELOPMENT的短期来看,MFIN能立马见效,因为一上来就学FINANCE,马上就
能学以致用或面试SHOW给人看,而学PT MBA我必须先花二十个月去扫清那些与工作无关
的ＣＯＲE COURSES(对与读PT的,可能都不会有太多耐心去学一些与工作无关的东东).
从CAREER DEVELOPMENT的长期来看,两个DEGREE都没太多MATTER,毕竟DEGREE是拿来敲门
的,将来的发展靠的是expereince, work achievement, and luck.
关于转行,只要是相关AREA转,such as 从技术转到本公司的sales and marketing, 从
银行IT转到相关部门做业务,靠读PT DEGREE是卓卓有余的(其实不读也行),如果转的比
较离谱,such as switching from biology to i-ban |

corporate governance, M&A 等等。
相对于其他领域来说，corporate finance对数学和计量等technical的东西要求要低一
些，更强调idea。
想请问这些个子方向里哪个或者哪些对数学和计量等technical的东西的要求是最低的？
要定研究方向了，感觉哪个都不讨厌，就像当初高二下文理分班一样，很难抉择。看
wsj就兴奋，看handbook挺快乐，可是看paper里那些数学和计量就不怎么感冒了。也是
个整天有一堆想法的人。但是我也知道不能浮躁，要脚踏实地，只是想找个能发挥自己
比较优势的方向。就好像larry lang，他要是换作搞其他任何一个领域，哪能有后来那
些publication呢。 |

less econometrics and math, but the future development trend is that more
elegent econometric methods will be required for corporate finance as well
since ideas are close to exhaust, just like asset pricing...

package. (of coz in academic terms, it's really hard to compare a Nobel
Laureate with an average school finance AP...)
Industry track: Finance phd usually goes to wall st firms; for econ major,
there are world bank, IMF, UN etc...
As always, interests weigh much higher than job perspectives, for phds.... |
