good school (top 50)..
But I want to get the green card ASAP. Is it feasible to get a faculty job
in a school ranking 150-200 and then get the green card within a short
period time? After getting the green card, perhaps I will jump to industry
to be a programmer. But I feel this plan is sort of naive. Any opinions? |

medical professional。Having an advanced degree might be useful for
practicing patent law.
去公司一般吃的是青春饭，所以大家都想去做Faculty. 其实博士毕业的做Faculty还是
少数派。大家不是都活过来了吗？
创业也是个挺好的出路， 不过有很多外界因数。 个人觉得做个成功的职业操盘手不错
,有个电脑就行了。不过成功的路挺坎坷，most people never made it. 和创业比，更
取决于个人的造化。
拿不到tenure不是件坏事。我有一伊朗哥们总会说 ``God has its plan."
对没评上tenure年纪大的教授出路会少一些。读Law School or Medical School不是很
feasible. |

发帖数: 1359 | 33 我觉得你老板的想法比较合理，确实是你往低端杂志投，人家也未必让你轻松过。博后期间多发些文章当然好，但是即使你这篇文章能很快发个一般水准的杂志，你还是只有两篇一作，也没啥本质区别。还不如赌大的，试着第二篇投个好杂志。
我博后期间只有两篇一作，还不是什么牛杂志，也被reviewer批过productivity low，现在写申请的策略是，狂多数据，靠prelimilary data补publicaiton record。我自己的感觉，申请资金的时候，publication record就是个拿来批你的申请理由，其实骨子里，reviewer想看的还是prelimilary data。data很多的时候，有一些如果能提前发表出来，会对申请有帮助。
我的一个申请，第一次只有理论没数据，reveiwer批我说：这个方向，pll一点
publication record都没有... 第二次，我把Aim1作出来了，验证了feasibility，不
过离做出来还远。这次reviewer开心了，说：虽然pll在这个方向没太多publication，但是pll同学的底子不错，做这个新方向应该没问题... 承... 阅读全帖 |

对于proposal，还真是找不到感觉。自己性格偏保守，而且写proposal的时候，很多东
西都是自己觉得可以怎样，不能证明的，所以也没法很严谨。同时DOE强调应用性，
feasibility,所以也没法很有趣或者很state-of-the-art,所以就没感觉了。大家可以

里经常需要钱建设或改善。作为faculty, 可以帮他们申请federal or state money.
他们都有他们的political 的渠道，有scientific support, feasibility study, 他
们会更有希望搞到钱，他们搞到大钱，我们分点小的，比他们去找consulting 公司要
便宜, 而且他们说出去也好听。还有我们这里有个port, 和ship channel, 很有钱的单
位，有些小的问题 army corps of engineers 懒得来理，我们要是知道就去联系联系
，几万块的funding 也很容易拿。关键是要去认识当地的人士，多social.
Teaching, 一个是前面说的不要把学生当敌人，能帮助就帮助一下。另外就是要时时强
调自己fair，要想办法让他们觉得是自己不行，而不是老师的问题，他们也没什么好说
的。我主要教的一门课，每学期平均就是C，很少的A，总有1，2个F，很少学生来跟我

I want to add that the difficulty goes beyond recognizing a plan = solve
hunger problem and an action = go kill a chicken and make a meal. Usually
the candidates can explain some type of vision 'I want to cure cancer'. But
this vision is far away from their action plan 'use Crispr-opto-super-res
imaging to blast cancer cells', that it is not possible to connect.
The vision needs to be bold yet achievable. The action plan needs to be
feasible yet exciting.

draw it on the board before the chalk talk.
In each aspect, think about specific experiments and funding target (like
foundation or which NIH institute)
Prepare answers to the Qs about significance of your work and innovation in
your work.
Make sure you know what technique will be needed to conduct the research. Do
you know how to do it or have access to it (feasibility)
Just be confident, and speak logically and slowly.
