degree.
1: go to a community college, get a 4.0 GPA.
2: transfer to an engineering program at a 2nd-tier state university,

一开始,他说,hey u know how different “effect” and "affect" r?
然后我by default地认为他在问二者作为动词的区别,就一通查,然后一通解释。
然后他说,oh ok, so---"the affect is pretty obvious?" i should use it like
this?
我一听就崩溃了,我说,那什么,原来你是要问作为名词该怎么用啊!?
然后他说,noun? noun means "something" right?

MBA这个东西是美国人搞出来的,其实创立这个学位就是一个商业行为,和学术毫无关
系。这个教人怎么忽悠的学位是东西彻头彻尾美国这个提倡忽悠的社会的产物。
美国有个词,叫“salesmanship".中文没有对应的词汇。salesmanship字面上是把一个
东西成功卖给对方的能力,广义说是推销自我的能力。这个词很冠冕堂皇,其本质就是
教你怎么在做纸老虎,怎么在没有真正能力真正知识情况下让人觉得你有真正能力真正
知识。当然忽悠是人的本性,中国人会忽悠的人也不少。但是区别在于,中国忽悠是一
个贬义词,不被提倡的。美国社会主流意识里面,salesmanship是一个褒义词,是被大
家推崇鼓励的。
举几个简单的例子,公司面试,问你:“请你谈谈你的弱点”。大家都知道都不能直说
,只能说一些不痛不痒的东西。我就奇怪了,你问一个问题不想让对方说真话?是来考
察对方如何拐弯抹角的来从容应付这个问题?问这个问题的人自己知不知道对方的回答
99%是瞎编的?问这个问题目的是什么?

这个夏天,我去公司实习,学校graduate program允许学生注册实习学分(就是交学费
,去实习,然后给学分)。但是,前天成绩出来后,我发现这个实习课程的成绩却是
Fail “F”。不但没有拿到学分,还把GPA拉了下来。经和老师沟通,发现这个实习课
程要求提交essay,可是我不知道这个要求,所以没有在deadline之前提交,于是老师
给我fail。
老师非常坚决,说我没有看syllabus要求,是我的责任,所以不肯make exception。不
让我补交essay,也不能改成绩。我是没有看syllabus,因为我根本就不知道有syllabus
。我觉得这件事情老师也有很大责任。
(1) 对这个实习过程,syllabus (后来通读) 要求老师在3个星期内和每个学生meet,
向学生讲解这个实习课程的要求,并且确认学生收到并阅读syllabus.可是老师从来没
有contact过我
(2) 我在学期刚开始的时候,确实到网上系统里找syllabus,可以那个时候老师还没有
post上,所以没看到syllabus
(3) 学期中,我也不断的上网上察看,老师没有任何announce... 阅读全帖

反正字典里就指向了essay 和 prose 这两个词。百度是在下面这么解释的。看来散文
是中国的一个专有名词,没法找到一个精确的英文翻译。
散文(prose;essay)是与诗歌、小说、戏剧并称的一种文学体裁,指不讲究韵律的散
体文章,包括杂文、随笔、游记等。是最自由的文体,不讲究音韵,不讲究排比,没有
任何的束缚及限制,也是中国最早出现的行文体例。通常一篇散文具有一个或多个中心
思想,以抒情、记叙、论理等方式表达。

I guess i am a totally illiterate such that i never can understand why
Shakepear is good...
i don't really think i can read philosophical/economic books before i
sleep...i cannot really follow them even when i am awake...i have to be in
real sharp mind state to read them...unfortunately such states aren't too
often ;-)
another possibility is essays...a lot of good essays around...and you can
finish them in less than an hour or even less...which should be

Because I enjoy reading essays which are concise and logical. I think logic
is unnecessary for poems and novels, but it is essential for essays which try
to convey some opinions, either reliable or not. Now I know that many people
don't care about it :)
To a certain extent, I buy his points, not due to his work. I guess quiet a
few writers have expressed similar opinions before, including George Sand.

昨天在npr的早间节目的一个小栏目This I Believe中听到她的essay被打动,打算找她的
书看看。
她是John Hopkins School of Medicine的psychiatry教授,但是自己年轻时也有过
bipolar disorder,所以对其有着深刻的体会和感受。她的一本畅销书An Unquiet
Mind 就是讲自己的经历,我打算找来看看,希望能对自己有所启发和帮助,也许更重要
的是想找到那份对自己目前心境的理解与共通。

sigh, you ARE the brainy chinese.
Maybe my english did not convey my joke well, all I thought was that it takes
a special reason for a certain ID to start write out a well-formed
college-style essay whenever he gets the chance.
But this one, will be failing as a college essay, since it gives out not
supported, overgeneralized and blatantly biased statements on one culture, and
all of which are not even slightly related to the post this lengthy arguments
are supposed to be replying on.

其实有些native speaker写essay不一定比中国人好,当然有的写得好的是真的好,你
读着觉着不是在读文章,而是像在听音乐那种
那些不好的不仅仅是结构逻辑的问题,而且是语句表达都不够水平
俺和老美一起写过essay, group project。最后发下来,教授特别把俺写的一段勾出来
,说这段写得非常好,哈哈~
BTW,我都懒得跟他们比数学,那算欺负他们

时间太久都记不清楚了,记得好像是三部分,一个考试,一个project,一个essay, 其
实简单的要死,考试的部分需要看看书,面比较广,但是也有scjp那么细,对工作久了
的人,接触东西多但是细节记不清的人来说更合适。project是只design不真做,类似
我们说的阿三的ppt, 最后的essay就是大概讲讲你的design的想法。
我记得当时唯一的障碍就是那封employer信,因为我是07年才转成architect的,前面
都是engineer, HR 不肯给我写五年经验。后来问sun的客服,说只要是公司letter
head就行,于是找manager, 他大笔一挥,就把我的问题解决了。
