really hard to understand. In chinese words, "晦涩难懂,读起来不流畅”。By
comparison, Jane Austen's works read much easier.
e.g. How to interpret this sentence in A tale of two cities, book second,
chapter 2:
So powerful is use, and so desirable to be good use in the beginning.
How to translate this in Chinese, and what does "use" refer to here? |

膊套起来。driving him into his corner和pounding against the next passenger并
列，指绳套套住他，使他不至于被马车的颠簸颠到角落里去。我猜是这样。
austen句子也很长，结构也不简单。可能她描写男女感情这些经久不变的内容，词汇变
化范围不大。dickens写社会，社会的变迁就大，现在的人不熟悉当时的社会习俗事物
，理解起来就更费力些。

威。12月7号正是目前为止最冷的一天，零下8度...船上装了一个燃气火炉，外加两个

格很不一样？twain好像省俭、现代，dickens好像句子更长，传统的句式看起来费脑筋
。描写很巨细无遗。dickens激情饱满，twain好像更有怀疑主义，感觉更收敛，有点捉
摸不透他。都是很久以前看的，印象可能不准。后面三个好像都看过中文版的电影，但

“电影里有两个情节我最难忘。一是Sophie去图书馆借Emily Dickinson的诗集——那也
是个终生守在自家窗口、却描写出一个最瑰丽的死亡世界的“边缘”女诗人。管理员错
把Dickinson听成Dickens，不耐烦地大声说只有Charles Dickens，没有Emily Dickens
，把Sophie吓晕在地。除了身体虚弱的原因，这里更有心理的因素：庞大的图书馆，沉
重压抑的层层书架，冷漠的管理员，有如这机械化的现代社会，压迫着尚存人性的心灵。
另一个印象深刻的镜头，就是著名的“索菲的选择”。Sophie搂着一儿一女到集中营，
正见德军把羸弱的老人小孩赶入毒气室。她护子心切，向军医哀声求救，称自己不是犹
太人，会德语，是虔诚的基督徒。军医面对她的美丽和软弱，突然产生强烈的摧残她的

上次聊《走出非洲》时，tinte说电影里Meryl Streep演的Karen，叫情人Denys的名字
，都叫得尤其动听。Karen是丹麦人，Meryl Streep模仿丹麦口音的英语，口型小，语
调常常先扬后抑。这种特殊的口音，也正表现了她的特殊身份：一个背弃主流社会的边
缘人，操着独特的口音，来到远离文明的非洲大自然，寻找心灵的自由。
由此想起，除了《走出非洲》，Meryl Streep还演过好几个带口音的边缘人角色：一个
是《法国中尉的女人》，另一个是《索菲的选择》。
《法国中尉的女人》(The French Lieutenant’s Woman)根据John Fowles的同名畅销
小说改编，讲维多利亚时代的伦敦绅士Charles，和被讥为“法国中尉的妓女”的下层

动和爱情的元素，使得影片在简单的剧情下仍充满张力与情节冲突，有条不紊地推进了
故事的发展。
影片将非裔女性身上那股开放、坚强以及乐观刻画得十分细腻，除了导演的功劳外，还
得力于3位主演精湛的演技——平时用剑拔弩张的外表武装着自己，实则包裹着一个柔
软的心，让人觉得形象丰满、有血有肉。剧情十分热血，看完该电影的观众很多表示“

发帖数: 7173 | 41 其实我对mockingbird 一书感觉一般. 我只是读过了记得一些情节而已, 但并没有觉得
跟自己有多大联系. 还有 也是写小孩的, 只是太叛逆, 也和自
己的性格没有相似之处, 所以也没有共鸣.
但Twain 和 Dickens 笔下的小孩却很能和自己relate. 虽然都写孩子, 但两个人的文
风基本没有共同之处. 不过看twain 的书好玩多了, 看着只想乐. dickens 的则有点沉
重, 虽然句子很长, 但并不觉得繁琐. 哦, 对了还有一个孩子我很喜欢, Frodo in <
the Lord of the Rings>. 但其实他年纪不小了, 只是长得个小, 电影里又找了个小孩
来演. 书里的Frodo 都有四十岁了吧...写他的人也太多了.

1998年，我怀着文青梦，心心念念要考某大陆名校的英语语言文学系（原来打算考历史
系和文科基地班，老师父母劝阻，理由是将来就业会成问题，遂放弃），也考进了，十
年后还留在系里，求到份教职。十五年过去，山山水水看得渐渐清晰。
要交待一句，我在同一家大学的英文系，从本科念到博士，成绩始终不好不坏。留校后
，职业发展则是同辈中比较落后的。所以，体制内，我不能算既得利益派，心怀怨望，
发发牢骚很正常。而且，我素来偏激，年纪不小，依旧出言轻狂。尊敬的读者请务必注
意：在主流价值日渐遭 到怀疑的时代，牢骚、轻狂不一定是对的，需要批评看待。
本学期开学时，开明的领导组织我们开会，畅议教学改革的方向与步骤，当时我有一点
粗浅的想法。加之最近因为教学与两位师长发生小小误会，有所触动。所以，趁周末，
