这个其实 William Deresiewicz 在文章里隐含的说了:
... “intellectual curiosity” and ... “sense of purpose” ...
写文章的,总是要语出惊人。否则没有人读是最大的失败。。。
但是很多信息和观点,往往隐藏在字里行间。。。这两段全文如下
(重点在第二段,但第一段铺垫最好先看完):

粗看了一下,这三篇反对太弱了,文笔都比不上。
关键还是没有撼动 Deresiewicz 的 between-the-line 的真正意思。
我觉得 Deresiewicz 的真正字里行间的意思是,不要拚娃自己的 12 年就为了
IVY 的入学标准,否则最大的危险就是 “little intellectual curiosity
and a stunted sense of purpose”。娃应该沿着娃自己 instinct 的
“intellectual curiosity and sense of purpose” 追求。。。
如果将来有幸被美藤录取,那么,得之,我幸。。。如果不幸没有被美藤
录取,那么,不得,我命,高高兴兴去州立报道就是。
第一篇反驳最弱了,为了反驳 “lost”,举例说烂校的学生也一样 “lost”。
把烂校跟美藤比,都不知道是不是高级黑。。。这么说,如果小学老师
“lost in understanding the purpose of mathematics 这种问题”,
我想不会有人说啥。。。但如果奥赛金牌真三木也这样,我觉得是个人就会问,

好吧,我其实都憋了一游泳池了。。。
我其实不是故意抬杠,我娃曾经也有段时间喜欢过化学,但她真读娃版化学书就不行了
。。。我觉得主要还是 curiosity。。。我认为娃的 curiosity 方面最基本的两个问
题是(1)What we are?(2)Where we are? 。。。所以我认为这就是娃为啥之前之后
对化学的兴趣都不大。
不过话说回来,每个娃都不太一样。。。很多时候也就是娃的自然发展过程,别硬掰是
真的。。。当时她看化学的时候我还和她一起找书。。。

curiosity好像是天生的。我天生就不curious. 从小到大一直不curious.
可是家里的另外两个,就是born curious的。
我觉得curiosity很重要,基本上能决定将来成就的大小。
但是怎么培养,我就不知道了。如果你将来有心得的话,欢迎
来分享啊。

也许,这个 “瞎折腾” vs “competitive excellence”,其背后可能是人类的两种
fundamental instinct 的折射:curiosity vs optimality。
或者说,瞎折腾,折射更多的是 curiosity。而 competitive excellence / best in
best,体现更多的是 optimality。

小娃的curiosity,BTW,不是每个娃都有这个天性,或者在正确方面的这个天性;
老爸的对这种curiosity的保护和超级耐心;
看来你家上峰的wishful thinking 没准会变成rational expectation。
还有,你和你老婆都随身带手机。我就属于出门很少带手机的人,自由惯了。

关于一个小问题的一家之言。欢迎开砸。
去年底我曾经计划通过wechat开发为美国人(各种种族包括在美中国人)的服务。当时
的看法是wechat按照趋势发展会被中国人/亚洲人/黑白莫所接受。
这几个月来,特别是经过对wechat api和公众账号的检查,我的结论是wechat的设计思
想并没有考虑国际化。整个eco system是以中国的大环境为前提。除非你的服务对象在
中国,否则wechat大多数情况下不是一个general purpose商业接口。
今天有关wechat公共账号被关闭的消息算是彻底为腾讯在美国扩张敲响了丧钟。就像
google在中国水土不服一样,wechat在美国首先遇到的是文化和习惯上面的冲突。
为什么有这么多在美的中国人再用wechat?我的分析是wechat对中国有联系的人是一个
和国内联系的工具。和以前的同学联系,开始是挺有意思。除此之外,对wechat感兴趣
的是对中国文化有naive curiosity的外国人(包括abc)。尼克松当年第一次访问中国
时在机场的讲话提到,实质性的文化交流必须超越因为隔阂而产生的naive curiosity

1. I don't see how it is related to your point. As for new technology, new
stuff, new... you know when they let you. Arguing won't help
2. Curiosity is good, "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing
new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new
paths. " But you should be curious about how things were done, and why were
done a certain way, instead of if it was truly done. Just my 2 cents.

最近版上满篇的都是吵架贴,性版应该和谐是主旋律。我最近会写一些自己找escort的
经历,算是抛砖引玉吧。我以前从来没有在性版发过文,在版上也没有什么朋友。这次
是为了给众狼友分享找escort的经历,专门注册了一个ID,拒绝人肉。
我找escort的原因非常简单,我离婚了。刚离婚的时候,生理上心理上都陷入最低谷,
人都快抑郁了。这个escort恰如其时的到来,比什么心理医生婚姻辅导都有用。整个人
也通过这个找escort的过程找回了生活的感觉,escort对我而言就像是个restarter。
不过,毕竟是paid sex,有了几次经历,也觉得很无趣,以后也不打算再找了。满打满
算我找escort大概有一个月的时间。这一个月里,从一个从没有找过escort的新手,到

That's just because there is less pressure and worry about survival so we
could afford to live more in a world of imagination I think. Also, you had
more curiosity and energy, so you actually reacted to every moment in life
with more zeal and attention. I belive that when you achieve real
understanding of this world, you can still have that energy and curiosity, but
since you have no illusions, your poetry will be not just a random montage of
images but something that really reflects the truth

Same feeling. Why China needs curiosity-driven research? If yes, only 100
persons will be enough. (The government only fund top 100. Rao is not among such top 100 clearly.)
It is no sense that 1,000,000 persons work on such fundamental curiosity -
driven research. The USA's current fundamental R&D model is dying.

嘿嘿,其实我们的实际的生活是远远不及Grey’s Anatomy里多姿多彩,扣人心弦又实
在是乱七八糟的intern生活。
然而,小小的诊所也是一个接触五花八门的世界的窗口。在各个诊所,我们要和各科医
生,护士,医学生们合作, 接触多样的病人,病种,各种substance abuse, 和不同的
病原体。两周门诊的轮转结束,我的感觉就像以前看西班牙语电影“Talk to her”的

The plume issue has arisen before. In 1986, radiation spewing from the
Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine was spread around the globe on winds and
reached the West Coast in 10 days. It was judged more of a curiosity than a
