s earning data showed that the US economy was slowing down dramatically. Now
, economists have lowered their forecasts for the upcoming economic releases
, leaving room for these figures to beat to the upside. Of most importance
will be retail sales and housing data as housing has started to show the
beginnings of a recovery.
Earnings releases will likely be a bigger factor than economic data. Slowing
consumer demand in Europe and China has resulted in over 17 US large cap
companies lowering their guidance for the coming quarter. Market
participants are expecting at least a 10% miss of expectations for many US
companies with exposure to Europe.
And it wouldn't be a complete week without a European summit. On Friday,
finance ministers will meet to come up with solutions for the European debt
crisis, Greece, and the Spanish bailout.
Key earnings releases include Intel (INTC), Goldman Sachs (GS), Bank of
America (BAC), Morgan Stanley (MS), Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), and IBM
(IBM)
