How much does this fear affect her performance?
If it doesn't severely affect her performance, I won't make a big fuss over
it now. Let her outgrow it by herself.
Where did she get this fear, from her big sister, you or just her high self-
expectation?
If it's from you, you know what you need to do. If it is from her sister or
herself, I would tell her that nervousness is a normal human response to
stresses, and at the healthy level of nervousness, we can sometimes discover
our potentials. So the point is: don't let it overwhelm youself! take it,
accept it as part of our (art) life. Over the time, you will learn how to
take control of it. But for now, you are still young, don't push yourself
too much, just tell yourself (say it loudly if you want to):" I AM NERVOUS!
so what? It's not the end of the world!(or switch this sentence to any
positive words you agrees with)"
Linda, I think young kids are just lack of the experience to deal with high
pressure events. Their abilities on this will be built up over the time. But
believe me, the more they experience it, the more they know how to take it.
Our job is to help them minimize the negative effects and distract them
from focusing on it. I myself have a very sensitive and shy girl here as
well. What I did here is to understand her and acknowledge her feelings. Don
't ever say:"what are you nervous about? it is not a big deal!" Instead, let
her know that she is not alone, everybody would feel the same way in her
situation. Regardless of her fear, nervousness, or whatever, she can still
show people what Vivian's music is like.
