The California Assembly officially made Assemblyman John Pérez, D-Los
Angeles, the Assembly's next speaker Thursday morning, voting along party
lines (48-26) to elect the body's first openly gay leader. He won't
officially become speaker until he's sworn in, probably within the next
month or so (he and current Speaker Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, refused to
give an exact timeline today).
