It's happy to see David Gu's famous 3-hole hyperband and bunny's
parameterization figure again. And it's cool that Graphics peoples's work
are related to the Poincare conjecture -- the extreme problem in science! |

not very good for publishing papers in graphics community...

really recognized by the graphics people. |

is quite old in his research (not to mention geometry image, although highly
quoted), his later on contributions in graphics include conformal
structures for general surfaces, hyperbolic structures, ricci flow...

t*******e 发帖数: 21 | 6 I don't agree with the definition of "mainstream conference", considering
all the political issues inside each conference, and it's very common that
one group of researcher never (or never want to) attend the conferences
organized by another group. I believe top modeling conferences should
include SGP, SPM, SMI, GMP,... each one belonging to different (or may have
some overlaps) groups of researchers.
For a young faculty being recognized by the whole "graphics" community is
too difficult and see |

I read those papers 1,2 years ago when Gu was still in UFL, after he
graduated under Yau's advisory.
Gu's spherical conformal mapping method was adopted in a paper of mine.
That's why I write above to credit him.
I'm more application oriented, especially on 3D shape classification/match
stuff now.
Conformal structures for general surfaces, has limited usage in this
direction.
Though Gu wrote a classification paper base on them, I still think they are

works. Publishing papers in highly visible conferences is the way (probably
the only way) to increase fames for many ordinary researchers these days.
We just have to live with it. I am not familar with SGP (you also mentioned
Gu's SGP 03 paper). But my friends working in GP told me that this symp is
pretty decent. See, why GU's SGP 03 paper and Siggraph 02 paper are known?
and it happened to be published on the ones I m |
