Trying to patch together recession-pummeled budgets, eight school districts
in Santa Clara County will ask voters to increase taxes on themselves this
spring.
The proposed parcel taxes range from $84 per parcel sought by the Milpitas
Unified School District to $589 per parcel asked by the Palo Alto Unified
School District — which, if passed, would be among the highest in the state.
Milpitas and the tiny Mount Pleasant School District in East San Jose are
hoping to pass parcel taxes for the first time, because of the magnitude of
the cuts they are facing. They, along with Alum Rock Union elementary in San
Jose, will have parcel taxes on the June 8 ballot; the five other districts
are opting for mail-only ballots. |
