I don't think they escaped. I think they died at the end, just like at the
beginning when he was being trained, he crashed and he was told not to fly too

I can actually buy the story. because 1. she was born in italy, 2. her husband
was practically killed by this drug dealer, and 3. many of her young students
became drug addicts.

Giovanni's dad was the previous head of the police department. And the
current head was corrupted. The first shot in the office showed the guy
standing in front of the window looking outside when the officers
were questioning the gal. It implied that he had all the control.
That is also why Giovanni is very familiar with the police building,
since he grew up there.
They know that police are coming after them, just not sure when.
