I took these pictures at Louvres, whose collection is just amazing.
There are different types of the statues of Venus. Milo's is one; another one,
the so-called Esquiline Venus, is displayed in the Museo Campidoglino in Rome. | m****a 发帖数: 254 | 2 Please let me know whether you can see the pictures.

healthy nudity of the Greeks.
where | m****a 发帖数: 254 | 4 自己还是喜欢中国画面的纤巧飘逸, 当然还有中式美女. 这里的外国女人不知为什么看上
去骨头非常硬.

nod, nod
This is actually the general problem of the female figures in sculpture and
paintings in the Renaissance, too, I think. Plus, they tend to be very fleshy.
More so in the the Roman period and Renaissance than in the ancient Greece.

| t*******n 发帖数: 4445 | 8 The posture of the godesses reminds me of the following possiblity: the
figures were not designed to be seen at eye level, but somewhere high up.
To illustrate this point, compare 2 views of the same statue. At eye level,
the lower body is shorter than normal. But since it stands on a pedestial, it
looks all right to the tourist standing on the ground.

| m****a 发帖数: 254 | 10 It makes sense.
But the ancient sculptors seemed to be following a certain fixed rules
concerning portion, just like the modern artists do.
Aesthetically, I think people like longer legs now and they are working out
along that direction. In fact, statistics have shown that the legs of the
American women have been longer than in the beginning of this century. This is
entirely possible. In the older Hollywood movies, the women in swimming suits
also looked 身长脚短 and 'fatty'.
