Despite his chest-thumping, Donald Trump has no intention of being president
. The freak show we’ve been seeing is his version of a beer-fueled, harass
-the-neighbors midnight joyride. He knows, though he’d never admit it
publicly, he’d be panicked and overwhelmed in that job. Further, why would
he want it, what with the usual headaches that turn all presidents so gray
so soon when he can can luxuriate in his current existence? You know,
mixing with celebrities, lobbing accusations from the safety of the
sidelines, acquiring world-class golf courses.
Sometime in 2016, even if ahead in the primaries, he’ll likely withdraw
from the race, blaming intense media scrutiny of his present and past,
scrutiny that would, in his words, “Keep me from devoting my attention to
the serious issues of the job, something the good people of America just don
’t deserve.” The latest poll this Tuesday morning gives him an only
somewhat smaller lead of 7 percent, proving he can spew outrageous bile only
a relative few on the right disapprove of. But, for anyone fretting he’ll
actually inhabit the White House — let alone win the Republican nomination
— they needn’t worry.
