以前想问人家你是兄弟姐妹里面排行第几..
最常见的问法不是直接问，而是旁敲侧击:
are you the youngest (或者oldest）?
人家就会说no. I'm the second oldest...
至于问总统，旁敲侧击法失效，那么怎么问呢？

至于正规不正规就不知道了。
正规的问法是：

the point is，英语里面天生缺个“第几”的表达法。所以不能直译，只能意译。
你说了半天就是说各种意译替代法嘛，这些大家都会。
“第几”和“什么名次”虽然在这个特定语境下意思一样，但是是两个不同的词。
中文的“第几”，可以用在出生次序，总统次序，比赛名次，排队序号等等，都一样用。
英文里面就要根据不同的语境，用不同的词来替换。
ranking只能用在比赛，president number只能问总统，birth order只能问出生。
这就是和“第几”的区别。
不像陈述句里面“first”和“第一”就是同一个词，可以互相直译。
ps: 你可以说一万遍birth order从理论上是多么有逻辑，但是现实中就是没人这么问。
楼主的问题不是怎么问能让人明白，而是美国人实际生活中是怎么不拗口地问的。
