Have you drived a car before?
If this is your first time to own a car, I would suggest a 穷学生 start with
the cheapest beat up car you can find for first 6mo or 1 year. I like old
volvo or MB for $500 if you can find one, they are very safe if get in to a
accident, for only $500 you don't have to buy full coverage (which is very
expensive for someone does not have any driving experience), but they are
only for local use only ( I do not suggest you drive it to visit a friend in
another state).
If you did well (did not get into a accident) after 6 month or a year, you
can still sell your old beat up for what you paid for (if it runs ok when
you bought it, chances it will continue to run the same way) and get a $3k
to $4k car, don't expect too much for a nice DFBB, but you should be able to
get a nice american or korean car that is more road worthy (you can take on
a long trip). It is best to buy one from someone you know or can trust, you
might want to consider start going to some big american chuch, you could
get lucky when some old lady gets too old to drive and you can get the car
cheap from the family. For your price range do not go to dealers at all,
they will most likely sell you a over price piece of junk they just picked
up from auction (most likely the previous begin to have problem and trade it
in). Most people do not get rid of perfect good running car in this price
range (I am guessing the owner are not rich and usually don't take of them,
with the exception of old lady). You don't want to buy another person's
problem or delayed maintaince cost (such as expensive timing belt change).

面修，修理费你的心理底线是多少？按照你提出的条件找到的车都比较久了，随时都可
能出毛病，当然没也有可能不出毛病。要是你懂修车， 买这样的车，应该还行，要是
不懂，三思而后行吧。不要把3000刀打了水漂儿。。。
