think most of your arguments are distortion to the situation in that era.
In early 1980's, USTC is one of the few, if not the only, universities in mainland
china where students could change their major or department,
even move to aother university. I rarely read the school's magazin (xiao4
kan1), but one article I read in my first year gave me such a strong

不赞成“狗不嫌家贫”式的爱校观，我上过三个大学（两个在美国）。留下的总体印象
，两个感觉还行（包括USTC），一个不喜欢。
不过，毕业好些年以后，还抱怨学校和专业的，确实没啥道理。
恢复高考以后，我们那个城市第一个考上科大的，就是去了７系，当时此人成了全城的
名人，“科大空间物理专业”，让我好不羡慕。唉，一晃都快三十年了。
你今年夏天回科大参加同学聚会吗？
