“multiculturalism… is not who America is.”
I am still shocked over Pompeo's statement over multiculturalism. He needs
to explain what he means by this, because this is what fuels the nativism/
white supremacy crowd.
Culture: the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a
particular nation, people, or other social group.
I am retired military. I have always linked multiculturalism with my time in
the service. I went to basic training with 50 men from all over America...a
few from overseas countries. All of us came from different backgrounds...
and yes...different cultures. I brought attention to my Central Appalachian
culture. This hillbilly was fortunate enough to learn and understand my
fellow Airmen from all over the world. We learned about each other's food,
music, slang, traditions, and a whole lot more. That is how I describe
multiculturalism.
What is Pompeo definition? Is his definition at odds with mine? Does this
need an explanation because the nativists/white supremacists definitely does
not want what I experienced in the military.
Multiculturalism IS America. | b*********3 发帖数: 1709 | 2 A century ago the multiculturalism feared by the resurgent KKK and their
allies included Catholics and Jews, Italians, Russians, Poles and Greeks (
along, of course, with African-Americans). Some of Pompeo's ancestors are
among those who nativists feared would destroy America's identity and
culture. | b*********3 发帖数: 1709 | 3 I might grant there could be a conflict with what's sometimes called "
Hegemonic multiculturalism" and I don't know "Relativistic multiculturalism.
" Hegemonic multiculturalism indicates that there is a dominant culture and
several minor cultures given rights. Relativistic multiculturalism would be
that any statement that one culture is better than another is wrong. In
extremis this would mean you can't say that a culture that practices
widespread pederasty, such do exist, is worse than a culture that doesn't.
Granted I don't think any American is so relativistic they're going to start
letting people be pederasts or even practice hudud. (Hudud is like the
punishments in Islamic law. The more controversial including like amputation
and stoning.) | b*********3 发帖数: 1709 | 4 If you are a Christian and live by Christian laws so long as they don't
violate the laws of the land, what makes you any different than a Muslim who
is living by Muslim religious laws so long as they don't violate the law of
the land? Or Kosheral law for that matter?
Freedom of Religion doesn't mean freedom for Christians only, it means
freedom for everybody no matter their Religion, and does not excuse any of
them from breaking the law. | b*********3 发帖数: 1709 | 5 In Trump country, I found that ordinary ethics – decency, honesty,
generosity, love for one’s fellow human beings, tolerance – were not
merely undervalued but effectively desecrated by people who thought such
ideals corroded strength and that strength was what mattered.
The ideals of Nazi Germany. Trumpism is fascism, yes it is. | b*********3 发帖数: 1709 | 6 That's one part of fascism. Another is believing that one group of people is
fundamentally superior to another on account of race, nationality, greater
wealth or that most twisted misrepresentation of evolution, social Darwinism.
The response to all problems is to find a scapegoat rather than a solution.
The fascist society is described by its leaders as simultaneously great and
at the same time completely vulnerable. The USA is the greatest country on
earth but at the same time under existential threat from a small group of
desperate Central American refugees. |
