I'm not questioning whether he deserved to get into Stanford, his background
seems to indicate plenty that he did, but I still don't think that response
is acceptable. As a former TA, one of the biggest problems I encountered at
the collegiate level are students who don't understand or even have a grasp
on critical thinking skills, including the ability to explain or reason WHY
something matters. You cannot simply state that you care about something,
leave it at that, and call that activism. Activism means you have to
convince others that something matters as well, and that means applying
reasoning and presenting evidence for others to look over and be convinced
by. More and more Americans don't understand how to do this even for simple,
everyday causes or subjects, and stories like this going viral don't help.
He was most likely accepted despite this answer, not because of it, but he
is sending a message that he is proud that he did not follow the directions
on this application and was rewarded for it, thereby encouraging others to
do the same. Frankly, this isn't an inspiring story, it's a disheartening
one, because I get the feeling that many kids will have the wrong takeaway
from this. "Hey kids, you don't need reason and logic to get ahead in life,
if you just care about something enough, stating that you care about it
enough times will be enough!" That's just not how the real world works,
especially a rational one.
