Less than a year after work began, the new community was ready for its grand
opening, on Easter Sunday 1963. Located on 70 acres at Columbus Blvd. and
Ft. Lowell Rd, the non-profit development cost $5,600,000 to build. The Most
Rev. Francis J. Green, Roman Catholic Bishop of Tucson officiated at the
formal opening for the 420-unit Christopher City.
By late 1967, the University of Arizona purchased the complex for use as its
married student housing. The purchase price was $2,450,000.
The UA continued to operate the Christopher City for married students until
August 2000. It had been determined that the property was infested with mold
and had to be demolished. The land was sold to local developer Jerry
DeGrazia for $8,550,000. |
